What age did your puppy crack toilet training?

Our westie is just 9wks and we're having very hit and miss days with her peeing/pooing on the puppy training pads.

Mom is getting a bit 'she'll never get it' and I've been reassuring her that she's only a baby and she'll get it eventually.

I'm a bit Hmm as this is moms 5th dog, but she can't remember the others being 'this bad'

So... bit of reassurance for her please. What age did your puppy 'get' toilet training?

Personally I am not a fan of puppy pads as I think it can be confusing for some puppies as effectively you are saying it's ok to toilet in the house.

Mine took a few months to be totally dry with no accidents. I often thought he would never get it but eventually it clicked.

9 weeks is so very young and if you look on the puppy survival threads on here you will see that lots of puppies take a while to be toilet trained. Yes you will get the puppy that was toilet trained in a couple of weeks but for lots of us the reality is that it takes as long as it takes and the key is to be consistent and to take them out after every meal, play, sleep, drink and frequently in between making sure you praise every time they go outside.

I don't think puppy pads work as they just encourage the dog to go in the house.

Ours cracked it at 16 weeks. We've had him since 13 weeks.

My pup is 12 weeks (I have had her 3 weeks) and she has pretty much got it. We haven’t used puppy pads though, just took her out in the garden ALOT and praised her when she went outside.

My Golden's breeder did a fantastic job of starting the litter toilet training so he was very easy to train. I think he had about 4 pees inside and only 1 poop when he came home. He's 9 months now.

My puppy wasn’t fully house trained until nine months. Nine weeks is insanely young. I’m afraid your mum is being wildly unrealistic.

I didn't use pads.

Mine was about 4 months old (16 weeks) when I could stop watching him closely indoors and just let him out regularly to pee etc. So long as he got to go out every couple of hours during the day, he would hold it until then.

He was 5-6 months before he started asking to go out when he wanted to go.

Eric was just over ten weeks but credit goes to the breeder who had started to train the pups before they left her so he knew the basics and the couple of accidents he had was more down to him being in a new place and me missing his cues.

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 22:01

Far too young. Some dogs aren't reliably trained until they're several months.
Ditch the pads. They just teach pup it's ok to go indoors.
Take (don't let) your dog out every half an hour. After food or drink or play or sleep too.
Praise for going outside. If they don't go? Back out in 10 minutes and try again.
They get it eventually. But you need to watch them like a hawk to prevent accidents.

tabulahrasa · 23/06/2018 22:02

16 weeks before he’d reliably ask to go out.

We got our two at 12 weeks and the breeder had them started so they only did poops outside. It took about a week to train them (we have bell trained both of them) and they are now 9 months. I think they had the odd (maybe once a fortnight accident) until about 5 months :-)

Mine was about 16 to 18 weeks, I did use puppy pads for night times as he would wake up 3/4 times and very early mornings (so lift from crate, pee, put back to sleep). But now he goes on command in the garden, if I want him to hurry I say "toilet good boy get treat" and he wees straight away :)

He will still go on his pad in an emergency but this hasn't happened for weeks now so I'm thinking of taking the pads away. Although part of me thinks to leave it in case he gets desperate when I'm out. I know lots of people don't agree with pads but he is a small breed so works for us.
