Are all greyhounds so "delicate"?

Oh my word, our hound has injured herself again! Since we've had her, she's lost two claws, cut the pad on the back of her leg running into something at full tilt, had a dog bite incident (OK, that one was not her fault) and now, she went yampy in the woods two days ago and has cut the front pad on her foot.

I'm not sure when to take her to the vet this time - I can't see what they'd do other than what I'm doing - bathe it and strap it up and keep her off it (which she is hating).

Is this a greyhound "thing" or is this just an unfortunate Flipdog thing?

My dog is a spaniel and we have had our fair share of accidents on top of all the illnesses. I think some dogs are just more accident prone Sad.

It really depends on the depth of the cut pad and whether there is a risk of infection regarding vets or not. We have managed a cut pad at home which eventually healed around 2-3 weeks. However, the first cut pad he had we were at the vets as it was deep and it needed properly cleaning. First they tried glue which didn't work and after a week one of the vets said it was obvious it was not going to heal without putting in staples to actually keep the tissue together. He then had it dressed with dressing changed every 2-3 days until it was sufficiently healed to be allowed to be exposed to the air and dry ground.

Definitely a greyhound thing. I lost count of the amount of money we spent having ours sewn up. I think the issue is that they can't think and run.

There was a time when I could tell you where every stretch of barbed wire was in a 10 mile radius of my house. Grin

We would get greyhound-scream-of-death when a pinecone was stood on, but then find a dog just standing quietly with a horrifically lacerated chest after failing to jump barbed wire. Confused

My Greyhound is also always injuring himself and I too have lost count of the amount of time and money at the vets putting him back together! He recently had a cut pad too which I managed at home for a few days but it wasn’t healing as well as I thought it should so got the vet to take a look and despite my best efforts had got infected. 5 days of antibiotics and it’s looking much better. I think LadyPeacock is right, they can’t think and run!

Flippetydip · 22/06/2018 08:09

It's not deep and I'm cleaning it each morning and evening with salt water and then wrapping it again. It's looking better than it did yesterday. If it looks infected I'll whip her straight in. Hoping to avoid yet another vet's visit - the vet will think I've got a crush on him the amount we're in there.

Yes "think and run" definitely do not go together.

Ladypeacock my knees went weak at the thought of a barbed wire fence.

My mum has had various rescue greyhounds and whippets over the years. Daft as dogs come, with ridiculously thin skin. Little whippet constantly cuts her tail open by wagging it too hard and sprays blood all over the hallway Envy -not envy

bluetongue · 22/06/2018 13:08

Love ‘can’t think and run.’ Grin Same for whippets. Sometimes I have to cover my eyes when my whippet tears around at terrifying speed.

My old pointy was fine - we had a £300 vet bill when she managed to escape the garden and jumped a barbed wire fence before some horses caught her in a pincer movement and kept her safe overnight till she was found.

Current pointy - we're up into the hundreds just from a fucking pollen allergy! Licked her feet raw which are being bastards to get healed, multiple infections got in, and just generally managing to get broken in a multitude of different ways constantly. Had another vet trip this morning - thank god we don't get charged extra for weekend surgeries and it's just turn up as you need to!

TropicPlunder · 24/06/2018 20:29

Bing what happened with the horses?! That sounds awesome

yongnian · 24/06/2018 20:35

Definitely a pointy trait. That and the screaming. And yes, paper thin skin.
One of our old boys was once heard to start screaming horrifically in the woods once, running in circles and hanging his paw tragically. On closer inspection he had.....stood on a sticky boiled sweet and it was stuck to his pad.
I could regale with many many similar anecdotes.
I will refrain and just say I once had a £7000 vet bill from a pointy. Yep.

BingTheButterflySlayer · 25/06/2018 06:36

The horses- she escaped, bolted and we couldn't find her so had leaflets around everywhere and were kind of anticipating the worst on the dual carriageway or train lines near. Had rung the local vets etc too.

Woman rang the following morning - looks like shed jumped into the field and then the horses she kept had basically completely gathered around her to keep her safe and still till morning when she went to check on them and found her!

TropicPlunder · 25/06/2018 11:21

That's amazing bing! Maybe they thought she was a foal Grin

Flippetydip · 25/06/2018 11:38

And another vet visit this morning to rebandage. The claw of the offending toe is pressing into the next toe and causing a pressure sore. For goodness sake. So they've rebandaged and we have to go back tomorrow and see if it's getting better. And then again three days later. I've got "mug" written all over me....

Bing I love that about the horses - that must have been a horrendously stressful night you spent though!

Have a friend with Whippets.....lots and lots of stitch ups I'm afraid chasing rabbits through barbed wire fences.

BingTheButterflySlayer · 25/06/2018 11:55

This is the moneypit for her hayfevered paws that have been an utter bugger to heal. There's also this ongoing installation error with her that she never seems to be the right way up.

Thank God our vet is relatively cheap and does weekend drop in with no price premium

Flippetydip · 25/06/2018 12:12

Adorable Bing! How do you find a cheap vet?!

OP posts:
BingTheButterflySlayer · 25/06/2018 12:31

Homecheck for her actually - homechecker recommended them over where we were going which was one of the really horrifically pricey ones in the local area.

They're a chain called "the vet" if there's one near you - worth looking into.

userxx · 25/06/2018 22:10

@yongnian sticky boiled sweet 🤣🤣. Serious drama queens.
