Puppy and ticks

We have a four month lab who I've started taking in the fields for walks. Went yesterday and when we got back found two ticks on him, got them off, checked for more didn't find any but found two more this morning, so obviously need to be more thorough. I've got the tick remover tool so have been using that. Any advice for prevention or removal? Am I doing it right?! First time puppy owner!

Two schools of thought.

  1. Continue to do what you are doing which is check for ticks and remove with tick tools after each walk. Someone on here suggested using a lint type roller on the dog to remove them after a walk but never done that myself.
  1. Prevent or treat with chemicals. Soresto collar, nexgard spectra, bravecto etc

Soresto collar is brilliant.

My dog who is now 18 months got about the same amount of ticks at the same age as yours. We used spectra then and now but he still got them but weirdly after about 4-5 months he hasn't had any! So maybe they're building up more of a resistance the older they get?

Wonderful, thank you for tips and reassurance!

We choose to use Nexgard as we have very hairy dogs and paralysis ticks in our area.

We felt that the benefits far out weighed any risks.

Ok thanks. What are risks? Lyme disease? And you've got a paralysis tick 🤢 I saw somewhere that leaving the head in dog is a no no. Don't pop them... I do lots of running myself through fields but have never had a problem with ticks! Feeling clueless!

We are in the south and lymes disease is a big risk for us (dog and human).

I treat our dog which should kill the tick within 24 hours, in theory before they have passed on any diseases.

I really should preface all my posts with ‘please note I live in NSW, Australia’!

Paralysis ticks, if not removed almost immediately can kill a small dog or st the very least leave you with a very expensive vet bill.

There are risks of side effects with Nexgard, as there are with all chemical preparations, from low level ones like vomiting and diarrhoea to serious risks such as seizures and even death.

We know we have paralysis ticks in our immediate area, we’ve found them dead on the kitchen floor after they’ve dropped off the dogs but I don’t know anyone that has had problems with side effects.

If it was just normal ticks I probably wouldn’t bother.
