Hi, we pick our first puppy up next week and thought it would be nice to take the breeder something, to say thank you. Do people do this!? Any ideas? Thank you

We took ours some flowers and a Yankee candle as she had a few of them around the house so assumed she liked them! She seemed genuinely touched.

You're paying for the dog, I presume? Hundreds of pounds possibly? Why would you buy them a present? It's their job. They're making money from it.

Because i feel it would be a nice gesture.. I’m grateful that they have kept me updated every week with videos and photos and I’m grateful that they have taken good care of the puppy for the first 8 weeks for me!

But they're doing all that for money. I'm sure they'll be delighted with a present, but there's no need, they've not done you a favour. I know two people that breed pedigree dogs, they both left their jobs because they were making so much money.

BiteyShark · 11/06/2018 08:00

No I didn't get them anything. Wouldn't have occurred to me to do so either. If it's something you want to do then go ahead but I don't think it's expected.

We took flowers for her and some pigs ears for her dogs (we knew they were raw fed beforehand so didn't want to bring and processed treats).

Poor wee thing. 8 week’s is far too early. They benefit from even a couple of extra weeks. The breeder just wants their money ASAP, then they can get the mum dog pregnant again, to make more money.

PositivelyPERF you are jumping to a lot of conclusions in your thread. Personally I would always from choice pick up my puppies at 7 weeks of age. Puppies hit a fear period at 8 weeks and removing them from the litter at this stage can cause a lot of stress to the puppies.

However I am an experienced dog owner and know exactly how and what to to do to socialise the puppy.

Most bitches will not interact with their puppies from choice after 6 weeks ish.

8 week’s is far too early - 8 weeks is the standard recognised age for a pup to leave the litter. Some small/toy breeds should be left for longer, but lots of pups are perfectly fine to go to their new home at that age. Leaving them until much later that 8 weeks can create all sorts of difficulties with socialisation unless they are with a breeder who is going to take the time to take them out regularly to meet plenty of new experiences (unlikely if they have several puppies in the litter).
