Toy recommendations - heavy chewer!

Evening all -

We've got a 9 month old lab who, thankfully, doesn't really chew household items or much that he's not supposed to, but utterly wrecks ALL his toys, no matter how durable I think they are at purchase!

Any suggestions? He's got an antler, which is the only thing that has lasted, but he needs more than just that to keep him entertained. Honestly, he gets through EVERYTHING. I bought him a tough knotted ball today, made of rope and hard rubber, and within half an hour he'd frayed most of the rope and ripped off and swallowed a section of the rubber, so now it's not safe Hmm

The only other thing that's vaguely holding out is a large knotted cotton rope toy (you know the kind), but he's gradually eaten all the threads that fray out at the ends, so it's worn down to nubs. Not sure how much longer that one will last before it's not safe any more.

I'm even worried about the Nylabones because I'm sure he can get pieces off them or wear through and take the end off eventually.

He deserves to have plenty of interesting toys around but my bank balance can't compete with his jaws!!

Mighty Mutts do a 3 year guarantee

Kong Extreme range (black ones)

Chuck It Balls have survived a lot here from my ball obsessed terrier without even a dent in them

I buy some toys that are designed to be destroyed - Poundland rope toys and charity shop cuddly toys (hard eyes and noses removed) in particular

We have a beagle and the exact same problem. The Kong Extreme range is really robust...of course, this means our dog has no interest! Might work for you, though.

Also, join the Facebook group Canine Enrichment and search key terms like power chewer and tough toys. Lots will come up.

I have had bullbreeds/mastiffs and a rather persistent French Bulldog.

Here are THE best toys.

  • jolly balls (ANY) my mastiff has had one from a pup they don’t deflate even when punctured. Dog can chomp happily on it and where it ‘gives’, but the ball remains in tact, it isn’t too bad on teeth.
  • Kong (I find these okay, not as good as jolly balls and dogs just don’t seem to interested)
  • Nylabone (any of them are great, they come in flavours too, check on amazon for great deals)
  • happy pet ‘A Frame’ are amazing for puppies as they’re quite soft, but little bits can come off so keep an eye.
  • rope toys are also good but get the jumbo ones (these are great for teeth cleaning and their teeth get in between the joins in the rope)

If your lab is a smart cookie, which they tend to be, get a ruffle mat. Or for a cheaper option get some cones ( like you’d have for PE) and put something smelly under them as a kind of sniffer assault course.

Another thing that worked great for impulse control is something called a flirt pole. Practice sit and stay while attempting to ‘lure’ them with the toy on the end and then you can release and they get the toy.

If you’re happy to order from America try indestriuctibone.

Beagle x springer here, exactly the same he routinely destroys all his toys and we have accepted this as part of his nature and just thank the lord he has never turned his attention to the rest of the household.

Another vote for huge rope toys and charity shop toys who have undergone surgery to remove eyes.

A boomer ball worked wonders for us as he can’t get his teeth into it.

He’s never managed to destroy a kong, although the range of kong toys didn’t fare as well.

I also freeze his toys and treats in ice so he has to get through that first which he likes Grin
