Securing dogs in cars?

Getting a dog soon, rescue lurcher hopefully, and just thinking about kit we will need....
Is a normal harness attached to the seatbelt ok or are there special contraptions that you need?
We already have 5 of us in the car so don’t really want a big crate filling the boot!?

If there's five of you in what is presumably a 5 seat car, which seat would the lurcher sit on?

Dementedswan · 08/06/2018 21:20

You don't need to use a crate in the boot. Get dog bars.

Phillpot12 · 08/06/2018 21:26

It’s a 7 seater so has a big boot but I thought they had to be “restrained” in some way? Will look in to dog guards if that’s enough. Thanks

We use a dog guard in the boot which doesn't take up the space a crate does. Depending on your car and boot size you can get dividers if you need some boot space when the dog is there too.

Where will the lurcher be inside the car if there are 5 people in the car too?

Still better to have dog in boot, they can get very muddy on walks especially during the winter and I have never found seat covers that are non slip, absorbant and durable

WeAllHaveWings · 08/06/2018 21:31

Dogs don't need to be restrained to protect them, they need to be restrained so they cannot distract the driver or injure passengers in a crash.

Phillpot12 · 08/06/2018 21:33

Dog will often be in the boot or on the back seat with a person in the boot. I saw a photo of harness attached to a seatbelt and just wondered how it worked, that’s all. Friends have a big crate in the boot and am trying to avoid having the whole boot full with a cage.

Attach to dogs harness and seatbelt housing cheaper versions available

Flooffloof · 08/06/2018 21:38

Oh and check your back seat, we were going to buy a dog guard, when we were measuring to see what size was needed we found a net and metal guard already housed in the seat back.
Volvo btw

Spottytop1 · 08/06/2018 21:42

We have dog seat belts that attach to our dogs harnesses.

Spottytop1 · 08/06/2018 21:44

Just like the above link!

bluerunningshoes · 08/06/2018 21:48

the harnesses are often not safe.
either they break at impact and dog becomes a decapacitating catapult or the harness strangles the dog.
safest place for everyone, dog and human car passengers, is a special transport crate in the boot of the car.

Flooffloof · 08/06/2018 22:09

I think some of the Julius k9 harnesses are crash tested. I know at least one Bergen harness is.
With one of them and a restraint strap dogs should be ok

dontevenblink · 09/06/2018 05:25

When we first got ddog we tried one of those seatbelt harnesses. She chewed through the actual seatbelt whilst we were driving and we had to replace the whole seatbelt! So she always goes in the boot now Grin

BiteyShark · 09/06/2018 05:40

If you have a crash tested crate in the boot I think they are designed to protect the dog in the event of a rear end collusion. However, I used to just use a dog guard but it always used to bother me that he would be killed if someone drove into me and lets face it it's a common type of accident and boots are designed as crumple zones. I therefore moved my dog to the backseat.

adaline · 09/06/2018 09:59

We have a beagle and he sits on the back seat. We attach his harness to the seatbelt.
