dog treats?

We just got our pup Sunday and she has been a dream. Training her to go wee outside is going well. I am wondering what kind of treats to give her?

Mine get their normal food as treats! They eat kibble. Otherwise nature's menu do good quality ones, Zooplus do more interesting chews and things too.

My lot love dried sprats, and you can break them into small pieces for pups

High value treats... cooked sausage, cut as small as possible. Cooked chicken ditto. Cheese, ditto. And some things you wouldn't think of as treats also go down very well with some dogs - bits of carrot or apple!

Those nature's menu ones are pretty good if you prefer the convenience.

Frozen carrot is great for teething pups. Peanut butter and bananas too. And tidbits like chicken and cheese.

Ours also loves Lily's Kitchen training treats which helped us toilet train him - they're only a few pounds a pack in PaH.

I go for the high meat content treats - my dog is a pain in the rear if he eats anything where the ingredients list looks like "cereals, meat and animal derivatives"

For training - high value treats are those your dog will work for, so consider (each chopped up into little bits). Each dog can have its own preferences!
Cheddar cheese
Primula cheese - a little squeeze straight from the tube
Ham
Hot dogs
Chicken
Dried sprats (they are a bit smelly though!)
Tubidog liver / salmon pate (from Zooplus.co.uk; feed it like Primula; this is my dog's absolute favourite)
Dried offal - Treats2Sit4 has an excellent range at sensible prices (online). You can usually find some in my back pocket.

For chews, we use what can loosely be called dried bits of animal, such as
Dried tripe
Trachea
Pig ear auricles
Pizzle sticks (bull's penis)
Paddywhack
Lamb's tails

I avoid things like Pedigree Schmackos, Dentastix and the like, as they're really very poor quality. Rawhide is very controversial due to the way it is made, and so I choose to avoid it.

We used dried liver

pigsDOfly · 07/06/2018 13:59

When I was training my dog to recall a long time ago I found dried chicken liver treats worked perfectly as her high value treat; they were only ever used for recall.

They can't have loads of them as they're quite rich but most dogs will kill for chicken liver treats and they really worked for serious recall training.
