I'm just curious - i have a GSD, still a baby at 1.5yrs, and he is such a big softy i really wonder whether he would ever act to protect me.

when walking earlier, i had to go past 3 young men - felt a bit intimidated by them as they started shouting at me- but they backed off when they saw him - as he is a big boy.

it got me thinking whether if it came to it, DDog would ever protect me. he is a beautiful loving boy, but really just such a gentle softy I'm not sure he ever considers anyone as a threat? he has had such a charmed life he thinks everyone is a friend! has your dog ever stepped up when required?

Since it's been mostly big dogs so far, my great aunt had a lovely Yorkshire terrier, she was very affectionate and would do anything for a tummy rub. If one of the adults smacked one of the children though, then she'd go nuts at the adult and put herself between them and us.

It didn't happen often and we usually deserved it tbh but she didn't know that and guarded us anyway Grin

SilverHairedCat · 05/06/2018 20:03

My dingbat of a dog only barks at the sea 🙄. We have no idea how she'd react if something happened. DH things she'd step up. I think she'd hide.

Given she hides in the garden if we have a mild argument no you do the washing up I think I'm right. Only time will tell!

foxpox · 05/06/2018 20:04

My friend had poodles, miniature poodles. The male one would protect the underdog in any situation. So his owners could pretend to kick me and he would jump on my lap and bark at them! He was a good little dog to take on walks. He'd trot with you for a bit then I guess when he felt comfortable he'd go off for a little run. He'd come back always on first call. I'd still never have a miniature poodle but they're very smart and are proper dogs!

DuchessAnnogovia · 05/06/2018 20:04

My lovely girl, Ruby was the most daft, soppy old baggage, I loved it when she tried to sneak onto my lap. A 8.5 stone rottie/lab cross can't sneak! Was walking her one night, when she suddenly froze, and her fur seemed to bristle. She let out such a low menacing growl, really chilling. There was a man up the other end of the road, she didn't settle till we got home. Never did it before, or after that.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 05/06/2018 21:05

My terrier cross has a massive issue with motorbikes - he'll lunge and bark at them. He wasn't always like this, and it's uncanny that they're the local getaway vehicle of choice because the Met won't chase anyone on a motorbike for fear of them falling off and hurting themselves. They're also very commonly used to snatch mobile phones out of people's hands - we have some of the worst rates in London locally. I'm convinced PestDog thinks he's protecting me from being mugged - but has taken it a bit too far. I am working on training him out of it...

Almost everyone he totally ignores, but he has taken a barky dislike to a couple of dodgy looking people. One was loitering in the middle of the field in the park, by himself, no dog, cold day, and frankly looked like the sort of person you'd draw if you were asked to draw a sex offender - he was dodgy as hell and PestDog knew it. He's also seen off a couple of very drunk people - their not so subtle body language changes are clearly something he picked up on. And there was the woman clad entirely in a burqa who appeared around the corner of the street after dark one day - best not mentioned for fear of labelling my dog a racist, but I think he thought he'd met a dementor, with all the cloth swishing in a may-or-may-not-be-human sort of way Confused

I'm haven't actually been attacked while walking him yet but I like to think he'd defend me. That said, I'm 50/50 over whether he'd get confused and accidentally bite me. I don't think he'd make it as a police dog, somehow.

Greyhorses · 05/06/2018 21:17

My current two german shepherds would lick someone to death rather than save me I think ConfusedGrin

I did have another before them, the most loyal and loving dog I have ever owned. Absolutely devoted to me in every day, even sat outside the toilet door when I went. One day the dog decided to ‘protect’ me against someone who was no threat at all (a man walking past in a hood) and bit them. I had the dog put to sleep as it wasn’t exactly the first time the dog had shown aggression in a misplaced attempt at trying to keep me safe and it broke my heart- would rather have a soft soppy fickle one now!

ImogenTubbs · 05/06/2018 22:10

We have 11mo lurcher who we rescued three months ago. Don't know his history before then but he is a massive softy and incredibly affectionate. He's not much of a barker and loves visitors.

However a couple of weeks ago I had a rare night out and he stayed home with DH. When he heard someone (me) coming up the path at midnight he stood by the back door barking until he realised it was me (at which point he ran up for a cuddle). It was really interesting as it was a clear warning bark - not a noise we had heard from him before. Makes me think he would be protective if he thought I was under threat.

We had Newfoundland's when my sister and I were small. Both very gentle and fantastic family dogs. However, Ben took umbrage to the chimney sweep and wouldn't let him in until we got mum from the field (we were about 9/10 years old). He just stood at the door and growled - wouldn't move out of the way.

With our other Newfoundland, we had someone come to the door, who seemed a little dodgy. Asked for mum, but wouldn't give a name. Mum was out, but Lion managed to open the kitchen door and burst through, barking and growling at this man. He turned and left in rather a hurry and we never heard from him again!

My greyhound is the biggest softie in the world, but I'm sure he'd protect me or the children if we were in danger. Dogs are amazing creatures!

Lynca · 05/06/2018 22:25

My Newfoundland x GSD was very protective of me. If we went for late night strolls he would always be on alert and often spotted other people before I did.
I remember we went for a walk in the woods early one morning and he suddenly ran forward and did a few booming barks (not like the high pitched annoying ones he'd do to make me throw his ball). I looked ahead and noticed a man walking towards me on his own. DDog returned to me and stayed glued to my side between me and this man until he had passed and was out of sight. I'm sure the man was just taking an innocent stroll in the woods but DDog was certainly suspicious!
If other dogs came running over and jumped up at me he'd always bum-bash them away and stand between me and them.
I never once felt nervous or afraid when out walking him wherever we were, whatever time of day or night, as his presence would have been enough to make anyone think twice about doing something sinister. And if they did I've no doubt he would protect me.
He died just over a week ago of leukaemia. I miss him so much and can't imagine ever being lucky enough to have another dog as perfect as he was. Sad

BlueEyedBengal · 06/06/2018 07:13

Petra was an Alsatian the difference between Alsatian and g s d is the colouring. She was very tan with a dark saddle and dark muzzle and eyeliner like dark around her eyes

Greyhorses · 06/06/2018 08:02

Blue there’s no difference between german shepherds and alsations. The name was changed German Shepherd during the war for obvious reasons and then changed back.

WitsEnd2018 · 06/06/2018 08:11

Not my dog, but I was sitting in the park one day and a lady came and sat near us on a bench with her DC and she had a German shepherd dog.

After a while a man & woman came walking towards us who were having a row, the man was a big guy and very imposing. As they got nearer, the lady stormed off in another direction and the guy came walking towards us all who were sitting on the benches.

The dog immediately sensed danger and stood guard in front of his owner and her children. The dog was growling and barking at the man. The man didn't like it and swore at the owner of the dog and but then carried on walking.

I went over afterwards to talk the lady and said how lucky she was to have such an amazing and loyal dog! German shepherds are wonderful dogs.

WitsEnd2018 · 06/06/2018 08:18

Also I had a German shepherd dog growing up and he was a big softie at home with us kids growing up but he would stand for no nonsense outside! He was so protective of us and prevented a couple of attempted break ins with his strong, powerful bark! If men, in particular walked towards us he would walk in front of us so that he was between us and the stranger.

Incredible dogs.

We were sitting upstairs with our two one day, music playing, and suddenly Old Yeller galloped down the stairs doing his biggest loudest man-dog woofs. He never does that, he’s a tart and stays lying on my feet at all times.

DH laughed and shouted after him ‘get ‘em Yeller’.

He came back upstairs and lay on my feet.

When we went downstairs about 20
Mins later, we found the front door pushed to, not closed. Clearly someone had been in the house. Nothing was missing, no idea if they got past the doorstep, but obviously Yeller did his job.

He’s not barked since. Clearly he feels that his job is done.

Juells · 06/06/2018 09:28

when a man let himself into my kitchen he stood puffed up to double the size woofing and growling (and shitting but hey ho)

My lol moment of the morning Grin

massi71 · 06/06/2018 09:35

My border collie is aloof.

Last week while I was crying he came up to me and just leaned against me with his head and paw on my knees looking up and stared at me with his gorgeous amber eyes. When I'd calmed down, he licked my hand and curled up around me.

I need a man with that much depth!

Juells · 06/06/2018 09:39

That must be a collie thing. When I was a teenager we had a collie who'd sympathise like that when I'd cry behind the shed over some vast tragedy in my life. Later, when I had real disasters my various other dogs didn't give a shit 😂

LinoleumBlownapart · 06/06/2018 09:57

Our street had a stray dog known as nine dinner Nina. She sleeps in our house at night but during the day she's around everyone and everyone loves her. She's the sweetest dog ever, part pitbull, scary looking and blind in one eye.

One neighbour got a big dog called Max, who was untrained and a bit risky. As a result of this incident, he went to live on a farm but before that her 9 year old boy took him to the park at the end of our street. He wasn't on a lead. The boy was over exciting him and he started barking aggressively at another child. People were getting worried and telling him to take the dog home or put him on a lead. The dog was too big for the boy to control. Every time he tried to get him to go towards his house, the dog would run around him and back to the other child. Then Nina started barking and running down the road, everyone got worried, I was scared Nina would join Max and the child might be attacked. It was awful. But Nina came running over, barking aggressively and then positioned herself in front of the child and facing Max. She growled each time Max went towards her and the child. Max backed off and went home. She started wagging her manic tail and going to everyone for praise. She knew what she was doing, I think she analysed the situation. She's an amazing dog.

abbsisspartacus · 06/06/2018 10:04

Mine protected me from Jehovah witnesses Confused they knocked st the door and my placid dog went ballistic growling snarling big poofed up fur barking etc they couldn't escape fast enough surprisingly never received another visit at that house I think we got blacklisted Grin she never acted that way again

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 06/06/2018 10:05

Mine lets anyone and everyone into the house, except the post coming through the letterbox.

When I take her out running, she will bark at anyone she perceives as a threat. Just before she hides behind me. I think if anyone tried to grab me, she would just behave like she does if DH cuddles me, gets in the middle, jumping up thinking it's a game.

fleshmarketclose · 06/06/2018 10:16

Tiny Eric is very protective of us all and herds us when we are out and about. He is particularly protective of me though so he always stands between me and the neighbour's fence when I'm pegging washing out and he barks and growls at the neighbour if he gets too close to the fence. If he's off lead out and about he watches for me and if he sees somebody coming towards me he comes back to heel just in case. He's never done anything more than growl or bark but I suspect he would if I was ever in a position where I cried out though.

ToothTrauma · 06/06/2018 10:34

I have a daft gorgeous Lab who submits to chihuahuas and is sure that all humans are his best friend. We often joked that if a burglar came DDog would show him where all the best valuables are and then leave with them.

However, we were in the garden once and a delivery man opened our gate and came round the side instead of knocking at the door. DDog went bonkers - raced towards him barking his head off, hackles up. You’ve never seen someone run back behind a gate so quickly Grin

Got the guy to come and knock on the front door and DDog was delighted to see him. He clearly didn’t like someone coming in without us greeting them, which is reassuring I suppose!

Si1ver · 06/06/2018 10:39

My staff doesn't like me saying hello to other dogs, but she's only ever protective if I'm pregnant. Last pregnancy (which sadly ended in miscarriage) she'd get between every dog that came over to me and me, not growling or barking just wagging her tail and stopping them getting to me. This time round she'll come and sit as close to me as she can get whenever there are strangers in the house.

Chippyway · 06/06/2018 12:49

I have a gsd who thinks everybody is her friend. I always wonder whether she would protect me in bad situations. I like to think she’d pick up any bad vibes or bad intentions!

My last dog was a boxer/lab cross. I honestly think she would’ve defended me even if it cost her her own life. She hated anybody wrestling with me, would start barking if people were shouting. If anybody grabbed the kids in a jokey way she’d jump up at them to defend the kids and start barking until they stopped.

If any strangers started speaking to me or approached me she’d get in front of me and just glare at them the whole time.

However if she knew you, she was the most loving girl. She weight a stone less than me (muscle!) yet she would sit on my knee watching everybody just feeling glad to be involved. God I miss her Sad
