Help! New puppy hiding and won’t come out

We bought our new puppy home this morning. She is a 9 week old whippet. At the breeders she was really bouncy and playful but since we have got home she has hidden under the coffee table and won’t come out. She now looks like she has fallen asleep under there. What do i do? She hasn’t been for a wee since 9am and I am worried for her. Should I move her or leave her until she comes out on her own??

Aw leave her be and just be close by to pop her out for a wee as soon as she wakes. It's very stressful for them leaving mum and the litter, she must be a bit shell shocked. Whippets are sensitive souls so try and keep a calm and quiet environment until she finds her feet.

She's scared poor thing.
Leave her, don't wake her up, puppies need lots of sleep. Just take her out when she wakes but don't fuss if she makes a puddle.

Keep everything calm, don't let any one chase her round, she will soon find her paws and run you off your feet!

BiteyShark · 02/06/2018 12:34

Let her sleep. It's been a very stressful morning for her and she has naturally found a 'safe' place for a snooze under the coffee table.

If you look on the FB group :Dog training advice and support there is some excellent advice on all things "puppy". Have a look in the files under "congratulations you've got a new puppy".

Thanks everyone. I will leave her to sleep and take her outside as soon as she wakes. I am so excited to have her home but really nervous that I am going to get it wrong

Do you have a crate? Or could you put a blanket over the coffee table to make a "den"? It's great for them to have a safe hiding place for resting and getting away. Ours had a crate with blankets over it but the door left open. It was a strict house rule that if pup was in the crate no one went near.

Caramelapplecake · 02/06/2018 13:12

I was just about to post what strayducks has said - she's looking for a safe place. Yes to a crate with blanket over and door open if you have this. When we got out pup we encouraged him into the crate with treats then I stroked him to help him off to sleep!

On the positive side at least you know she can hold her wee for a few hours!

Good luck with the next few months!

Ps - picture??

Try some ham or cheese... dogs love both.
Friend has the laziest dog ever and even she runs for that.

CleverQuacks · 02/06/2018 13:15

She has a crate but hasn’t gone into it yet. I will put some blankets over the crate to make it more den like. She has just woken up and wandered out so I am sitting in the garden with her. She is running round like a mad thing so she obviously needed the sleep. Now just have to get her to do a wee

Our first puppy when I was a kid, hid under the table when we brought him home. It did NOT last very long! Grin and he was a lovely menace shortly after. good luck with your pup and enjoy! Hope she settles in nicely

Oh well done puppy on your first outside wee. Hope she got a lot of fuss.

I also put blankets over the crate and dog loved it in there for the first six months or so.

She still likes to sleep under under tables and beds and she 7 years old, although won't use a crate any more. Sometimes they just need to be in a 'cave'.

Any pictures, please.
