Rescue lurcher

Morning everyone.

I’ve been after a dog for years, timing is right, youngest in pre school two days a week, oldest in school. I work from home and two days in a dog friendly office so can have a dog with me all the time. We also live rurally in a beautiful area for walks.

My intital feeling was to get a terrier cross but there was a greyhound charity in town yesterday and the more I read about grey hounds and lurcher the more I think they are perfect for us. I made the mistake of looking at the website and there is a gorgeous lurcher that I think would be amazing for us.

The only issue is my other half doesn’t want a dog. He previously said we could when the time was right, this was a year ago. But he’s back tracked and says a flat no. I can’t get to the bottom of his concerns yet to counter them.

But assuming I can convince him, is there anything I should know or any pertinent experiences you can share with me? I had dogs as a child but not as an adult. I have dog sitted for friends and just loved the whole experience. Also, we don’t holiday abroad and have Mum as stand by dog sitter if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Good luck with your hunt! Our whippety lurcher Sam came from Celia Cross 6 years ago. I also currently foster an elderly greyhound lurcher for them.
(and we have a saluki / whippet youngster who was foisted upon us 6 months ago - not via Celia Cross)

So tell me, which Podenco were you after? ( I am totally in love with Bowie but dh quite rightly says that if I bring dog number 4 home he is having me committed to an asylum... Grin )

Did you do the great greyhound walk at Celia Cross last weekend?

I have done a few home checks for Jane - fence heights and secure fencing all round a priority!

We have a rescued greyhound (I'd always had golden retrievers before that so a big change for me!) Personally I'd always choose them over whippets or lurchers, they are utterly gentle giants, don't have the crazy/nervous energy that some of their smaller counterparts have and are just so easy to care for and loving. Our boy is now 9, we got him when he was 4 and wouldn't change him for the world. Hope you find the right hound for you OP! X

It was biscuit I was after... but Jane said since settling in there he was getting more territorial.

Oh just doesn’t want a grey hound. He wants a small dog. So we have found a puppy. A jack Russell cross.

It’s happened very quickly Shock

A rescue? Please don't tell me this is a cross breed found on the Internet from a ByB or puppy farm. Sad

Smaller dogs tend to smell less, but I think coat & regular washing matter most of all wrt smell

I have a yorkie. It used to stink. Even bathing once or twice a week it would be stinky within a day or so. Proper stinky dog smell.

Then i happened to pick up some cheap dog shampoo when i saw it on offer. He now doesn’t smell at all. He gets a bath if he’s been on a muddy walk or rolled in something, maybe once every 3 or 4 months.

Sainsbury’s own brand if anyone’s interested :)

Nope, it’s was from a nice family, with his mum, no puppy farm in sight. All checked out ok.

Well my lurcher wasn’t a rescue but here’s my story....

Wanted a dog. XH said I could have a small one. Had no clue how to go about getting a dog. Phoned the local pet shop to see if they had any litters advertised on their notice board.

They happened to have a litter. A couple of travellers had gone in with a cardboard box full of puppies basically saying “Take these off our hands or they go in a bucket of water” 😕

I asked what breed they were. Pet shop owner basically mumbled something to the effect of them being small terrier crosses. So I took one.

Small terrier cross grew into a large, lanky blond lurcher. Extremely intelligent (did competition obedience classes), incredibly good natured, total couch potato. Used to come to work with me at a stables. One sprint a day was enough exercise; the rest of the time he spent either under the desk, in a pile of rugs or on his own armchair and you’d think he was stuffed.

Wonderful dog.

Ah I see you’ve found one.

I happen to have a JRT cross now.

Tbh a lurcher is probably easier. JRTs might be small but by golly you know you’ve got them 😁
