Upset tummy and Drontal wormer (tasty bones I think it’s called!)

Hi all, have any of you had a dog with bad diarrhoea following worming? My 5 1/2 month old pup has this a month ago, about 3/4 days following the Drontal based wormer and we didn’t think anything of it. 10 days of trying everything to stop it and we were successful. Roll on a couple of weeks later and he had wormer again yesterday morning and then terrifically sloppy urgent poo (on the pavement which NEVER happens with him) late afternoon. He’s a large breed so has to have more of the wormer, the larger he gets and he had 3 full ‘tasty bones’ yesterday. Could this be down to the wormer?

I've not had the bowel problems but my adult dog doesn't like the taste of them and it's always a struggle.

BiteyShark · 25/05/2018 08:47

My dog vomited once with drontal. He was much better when I fed it to him in his food.

Generally I expect a bit of a runny tummy after any wormer but if you think it's connected and enough of a side effect then ask your vet if there is an alternative to try.

Bananarama12 · 25/05/2018 08:48

I had this with mine. You can use panacur liquid instead or powders. Bit gentler on the tummies

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 25/05/2018 08:52

I'd expect them to be a bit sloppy the day or 48 hours after the wormer as it's literally clearing them out. 10 days of issues? I'd be chatting to my vet.
Is there a reason that you're working again only a few weeks later? Unless there's an infestation, it's every 3 months with Drontal?

Bananarama12 · 25/05/2018 08:57

You don't have to worm them either unless you suspect they have worms. Wormers only kill worms IF they have them, they don't prevent them for the 3 months iyswim

pigsDOfly · 25/05/2018 09:24

I'm a bit puzzled by the few weeks thing too. How often are you worming him Bigfat? Shouldn't be more than once every 3 months.

Also as Bananarama said they only clear out worms and don't actually act in a preventative way. I didn't know that and only found that out from MN when my dog was a few years old - I also looked it up online to confirm it - and don't give it regularly now.

My dog was sick last time I gave her a Dontral tablet, but I think that might have something to do with the medicine she's on.

We have to worm monthly up to 6 months with our vets, then it’s every 3 months. The next one is not due until Aug as he’ll be over 6 months old.

He was ‘sloppy’ for 10 days on the first occasion as he just coundnt seem to process his normal food and we kept having to start again (starve and feed) plus DH accidentally fed him twice on one day within 20 mins which set us back again!) We eventually went on to chicken and rice and it cleared up within 48 hours then.

He’s just had a poo now and he’s pretty solid again (chicken and rice for 2 meals) but I’ve also rung the vets and they think it’s the Drontal too, especially as it’s been such an acute reaction. The Aug wormer will be a different one but we’ll also have to change flea treatment as his current one is contraindicated with the wormer replacement. Poor bugger.

Wormcount is an option - then treat if your dog has worms

wormcount

Bananarama12 · 25/05/2018 13:06

You don't have to do anything, remember you're paying them and it's up to you whether you want to give treatment to your dog every month.

Bigfathairyones · 25/05/2018 13:18

Thanks all. We may well need to revert to wormcounts, especially if he has a reaction to the new meds too. Fingers crossed.

Oh sorry Bigfat I didn't realise he needed to be wormed that often at that age. Mine's 7 years old now, the puppy stage is but a distant memory.

pigsDOfly · 25/05/2018 13:31

The worm count thing looks interesting. Do you use it yourself Vallahala?

My dog has a rather odd reaction to the spot on flea/lung worm treatment so would rather not use that either.

WeAllHaveWings · 25/05/2018 14:36

Our dog vomited with drontal twice so vet switched us to milpro and he has been fine on that.

pigsDOfly · 25/05/2018 15:02

Will ask the vet about milpro as they told me the drontal should be fine with her medication and it wasn't.

Shame as without the medication she's on drontal suited her and had no side effect whatsoever.

Bigfathairyones · 25/05/2018 17:09

No probs PigsDont; I suspect I may try to blank out the puppy days too so that I forget and get another one in a couple of years

Grin No problem.

shutthedoorbob · 25/05/2018 17:20

Drontal used to give my pup diarrhoea when he was little but he's 1 now and is fine with it.

Stellarbella · 25/05/2018 17:35

My pup had a bad reaction to Drontal - severe watery diarrhoea a day after he took it. Panacur seems to suit him better
