Hi... our wee dachshund - now 3 so less bouncy than a year ago, but not by a lot ... is rather enjoying sleeping on DD bed for the first few horus, before we move him downstairs....

They both love it BUT we're only 50% successful - half the time he gets bouncy and walks around the room

Its obviously a new experience to him, but apart from making sure he's well exercised, any tips on how to encourage him to curl up and sleep beside her???

If your dog doesn't sleep through the night and it wakes your child up then they're not really ready to sleep on the bed.
I think you need to be quite a deep sleeper to have animals on your bed because they do get up and move around.
I don't think your fantasy is realistic basically

Ignore those against it OP, that wasn’t the question you asked.

My GSD sleeps on my bed when DP isn’t staying over. When he is here she sleeps downstairs without any problems so don’t believe “you’ll be making more problems for yourself”.

She used to think it was play time when I first allowed her on the bed. I refused to play in my room and I still do. I made sure that she associated my room with sleep/chilling out. That means no toys, no playing and no high energy.

I wouldn't. Mostly because he could do damage by jumping off the bed. Why do you want him to sleep with her and then put him downstairs? Mixed messages.

Huge thanks to all of you for such helpful posts - though I had NO IDEA it was such a controversial subject....

Especially thank you to DottieRichardson for such thoughtful input....

Don't worry - we are super careful about his back and very aware.... and we've discovered that it was definitely the novelty that unsettled him... He's now delightfully going to sleep in her arms and the perfect panacea for exam nerves as she strokes him/her to sleep rather than worrying about papers coming up.... she sleeps on a mattress on the floor, when he falls asleep with her (usually under her bed for friends' sleepovers)... and then we gently remove him as we suspect he would wake and disturb her in the night: not a risk worth taking during GCSEs!

And he does feel pretty flexible as it's not every night, and he happily settles in his usual place in the kitchen on other nights... and indeed, after he's fallen asleep with her and I extract him in the wee hours....

My dog sleeps at the bottom of our bed. Then often comes up the bed to sleep between us. I can't remember teaching him to sleep with us, he just naturally did it from a pup. There's nothing better than snuggly dog cuddles on a winter morning.

Our dog isn't allowed on the bed or even in the bedroom - we close the door -UNLESS the alarm goes off, then it is her job to wake us, she opens the door and jumps on us. Often we're just watching the news so already awake just not got up yet.
Could you train yours to do similar?
