Seeing in the crate in the am

Hi all. Pup is 12 weeks old. Got him 2 weeks ago. When we got him he was already doing 7/8 hours at night before needing to be let out in the am for a wee/poo which was of course very welcome. After some issues settling he then started doing the same for us ie 7/8 hours at night then making a bit of noise and we let him out and he does a wee and poo straight away. All is good.

But for the last 4 nights he has changed to weeing in his crate before being let out. He then does his poo. We have a baby monitor so as soon as we hear him we are there. We think he has only just done the wee as he still has a wet willy.... We clean the crate with deodoriser etc so it shouldn't tempt him.

Any thoughts on this? Obviously he's doing well overall which is great its just a bit odd he's doing this when he didn't before and they aren't supposed to want to toilet in their bed. Obviously would Also prefer if it wasn't a habit....
Thanks in advance!!

My dog at that age would not have been able to hold it for more than about 4 hours over night. I therefore set an alarm and took him out, extending the time around 30 mins extra every two weeks until he was able to go through the night.

Interestingly at puppy classes I did chat to one couple who said there puppy could go all night but as the puppy settled in they started to appear to go backwards on toileting. I think actually as the puppy settles and grows and eats and drinks more then perhaps they just can't hold it as

Argh posted too soon....

hold it as long. Whereas my puppy was like that from the start.

Cleaning it all up is great but you want to stop a habit forming of toileting in the crate. Therefore I would start getting up in the night before they have an accident to stop a habit forming.

Really must stop posting too soon.

Whilst they won't want to toilet in there bed area at that age they simply won't be able to hold it for long when up and awake.

Hi
Thanks for this. It's just odd in two ways as he obviously does it just before we arrive and it's so quick band also that he previously did so well for a few weeks then stopped

I will get the alarm clock out again.....!
