Beach Diarrhea (or however it's spelt!)

Long story short - when to beach on Sunday, dog kept drinking sea water, figured it wouldn't be good for her so tried to stop her, but clearly didn't try hard enough.

She now has the squits but is happy and eating (bland diet after a 24 hour fast). Tbh, she wasn't a happy dog this morning (after 24 hrs fasting) - tail down and a stiff gait - but a bowl of weak bone broth perked her up a treat.

It has now been going on for 48 hrs. Whilst we have insurance the bastards Insurers won't pay for gastric issues due to her once having an upset tummy a year or so ago after eating god only knows what on a walk. (We changed providers in September and this was an exclusion that suddenly appeared on the policy!) Sooo, WWYD? Take her to the vets and pay a fortune to (very likely) be told it is the salt water and will clear up on its own? Or wait a while longer? I've also been giving her Pro Kolin (probiotic).

I'd think about the vet for possible salt poisoning. Our puppy drank some gravy once and had to be on a drip for 24 hours to get everything balanced up again. Quite dangerous for their kidneys I think...

You can safely give it another day on probiotics before going to the vet unless she is subdued, inappetant or vomiting.

Thank you for replying. Am pleased to report that she's her usual hyper, woofy and waggy self this morning. No poo yet which must surely be a good thing (my thinking being that the slower it is passing through the bulkier it becomes?) And she was very excited about breakfast - really took her time picking all the chicken out of the rice! Fingers crossed she is on the mend and my bank balance doesn't have to take a major knock!

My dog does this every time we go to the beach so we can't take her anymore. Dogs aren't very clever Hmm

JuneBalloon · 09/05/2018 06:55

Yeah... Doubt we will be taking ours again! Not only did she drink seawater she also wouldn't stop digging everywhere - I understand the logic (nice and cool) but somewhat annoying. Oh, and she told a couple of very cute Yorkies off for coming over to say hello.

Re your insurance policy JuneBalloon. Any exclusions you have can be appealed after a certain period.

My dog had an episode of colitis when she was a puppy, vet thought it was something going round, and when I took out her lifetime policy it was on the exclusions list.

After a year or two of no tummy issues I asked the insurance company to take it off the exclusion list and they were more than happy to do so. However, they won't do that unless you ask.

Many thanks for that Pigs. They did say it will apply for 24 months and it has only been 6 - yet another reason I don't want it on her vet's record!

Only one plop today so far - partially formed but runnier than I was expecting/hoping for.

Mine lovws the beach i make sure have fresh water available to and find he drinks this as well as seawater which in turn seems to flush the seawater out

Normally mine is ok within few hrs if do the above otherwise if forget the fresh water till later takes longer to get out of his system

Have reluctantly made a vet appointment for tomorrow afternoon (first one they had available). She's still happy but also still plopping turmeric coloured splats the consistency of melted ice cream... Confused
