Greyhound recall

OK, the time has come, we need to try and teach some recall to our wayward hound. We have managed to teach her to sit - which I understood was pretty impossible for greys but she's incredibly food motivated. Her recall was better when we first had her and she would come straight to the whistle. Now however, she'll come if she feels like it but not otherwise - her prey drive is high and she pays no attention to the whistle if she's distracted. Currently I only let her off muzzled in an enclosed field we have behind us and she's very familiar with it. She's brilliant with the recall if she's on a long-lead but can't be bothered off it. I haven't kept at it solidly I know so it probably needs a concerted effort.

Who is she most attached to? With my boy I made me the best thing around for miles, I would whoop and jump around and make it all sound so exciting, 'c'mon this way!! What's this? C'mon" and run away if need be,
That takes balls but running away from them makes them more likely to come to you.
I would then reward with a high value treat ( chicken or cheese).
One day it just clicks.

I posted about this as well but for my whippet who has her moments.
I truly believe that just about tolerable is as good as your going to get with these type of dogs.
Therefore my expectations and her compliance are pretty well matched.
It's never going to be as good as most dogs.
I can totally appreciate the can't be bothered thing as well.

I'm with Mairyhinge on this one. My previously wonderful at recall lurcher is having an adolescent blip (actually being a right pillock at the moment)

Anyway his favouritist thing in the whole world is to chase or be chased so my walks consist of me running away shouting "oooooohhhhh eeeee" and waving my arms around and when he come hurtling along and catches up with ds who is 100 foot in the opposite direction then does the same thing. We do this pretty much for 30 minutes and then all go home and collapse.

I'm hoping recall comes back I miss standing round going "ooh what's this" and seeing dpup glue himself next to me whilst waiting for whatever food offering I had

I'm sticking with the long line for a while though having recently spent an hour and a half playing "catch me if you can" with him. It was only because he stuck his head right down a sunken drainage pipe to get a drink of water that I managed to sneak up on him and clip his lead on.

Oh dear stray - that doesn't sound too much like fun. I have to have Fliphound muzzled as well as I don't trust her round teeny tiny dogs. Maybe I'll try her back on the long line and go right back to basics.
