First puppy walk

Our little lady's second jab is due on Friday and I've been getting very excited about being able to take her out. Then yesterday I read that you have to wait another 7 days after the jabs for the body to become fully protected.

Is this right? She's a retriever/border cross so has shed loads of energy and needs to get out (I know I have to build it up slowly)

Yes we had to wait a week afterwards.

Just beware - I was really excited about our first walk. We didn't make it past the end of next door's drive. He didn't understand what to do and I had to sort of coax him along with bits of chicken. Everything was so overwhelming. We did about 20 walks a day for the couple of days - all no longer than the end of the drive or just past next door until he started to get the idea. It took a week to get to the end of the road. I was really disappointed and a bit worried he'd never get it. He is now a walk pro! (He is nearly 5 months old). He walks confidently on the lead, waits at roads, crosses without stopping in the middle to sniff (that one took some doing) and get's let off the lead in local fields. He's been walked in fields, woods, by rivers, on the beach, in town parks... We get around a lot with him and he LOVES it!

Just to reiterate what cath said - the first walk is not really a walk at all. It's a few steps outside so the pup can start to build up a level of confidence. Mine managed to the end of the road and back but it was sloooooow going. It took him a couple of weeks or more to go much further and a couple of months to understand what walking is about.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 30/04/2018 11:40

They can't walk far in the early days anyway. (5mins for every month old they are - which doesn't get you very far with a young pup).

To tire an energetic breed puppy games and trick training that get the mind working will get rid of excess energy better than walks anyway.

Also carrying them out and about (I appreciate it's hard with bigger pups) is a good subsitute for walks, whilst you are waiting for them to be fully covered by vacinations.

Our vet told us two weeks to make sure she’s fully protected.

billybagpuss · 30/04/2018 13:20

thank you all Grin

I have been carrying her out and about, I can't believe how much she's grown already.

I also made her a toy for the back garden, its a pea stick with a teddy on a string tied on to it she has been chasing it around the garden. 5 minutes of that tires her out :) I haven't been letting her jump. We've also been practising walking on the lead in the garden with mixed success.

We think the retriever is limited to her left paw

Yes picture or it didn't happen!
Yes you have to wait.
But you can go out to lots of new places and sit and watch the world. We went to a garden centre, a dog show, the park, the supermarket and even a camping shop! New experiences and things that make their brains work are very tiring!

Wolfiefan · 30/04/2018 13:34

Oh my! Too cute. Time to get some training booked up too. That does tire them out!!

billybagpuss · 30/04/2018 13:53

Yes training is on my to do list, we want to do agility too I think she'll be good at it.

With that cross of breeds agility could be a good call. No rush on training but worth seeking out an APDT trainer. We have been doing obedience training for ages (not just puppy classes). My dog loves it.

Cheripie64 · 30/04/2018 14:53

Aw, she is lovely, very jealous Smile

missbattenburg · 30/04/2018 16:40

Yes training is on my to do list

Think of it more as something that will be ongoing throughout the dog's life (and not just something you do when they are young then forget about) and you won't go too far wrong. Try and make it fun, like a game and your little pup will thrive and love you all the more.

Puppy is super cute... take tonnes of photos and videos, they are little for such a very short amount of time. They grow before your eyes.

(feeling all misty eyed now because I kinda miss mine being so small)

sleepwouldbenice · 30/04/2018 20:37

Hi just to warn you I went to the vet with our little one today and she said our type of vaccination (nobivac) has a 3 week wait afterwards.......

BiteyShark · 01/05/2018 07:14

I think mine was 1 week after jab number 2 for parvo etc when I could then walk on the street.

We split off the L4 one into jab 3 and it was 2 weeks after that when I could take him through muddy forest/farm land.

So yes the specific wait will be dependant on the type and manufacturer of vaccine.

I echo others experiences with the first walks. Mine refused to walk and just wanted to fight and chew the lead Hmm.
