Dog now going for cats

I posted recently about my Yorkie pining for my Labrador (had to have Lab put to sleep after 14 years) Yorkie is 4.

He was pining terribly for his pal. However, started going upstairs to sleep with my 2 cats. Cats took him under their wing. However now he has started to turn on the cats. A few days ago he went for one, when it sniffed his face. Today he went the other, when cat tried to do a cat greeting head butt.

I have a dog crate downstairs, do I stop him sleeping upstairs at night? Cats are quite shaken and scared.

I remember your recent post, sad poor ddog is still not coping. Have you got to the considering a new friend stage yet? Sounds like he is frustrated the dcats aren't what he needs anymore.

He is also really nervous of other dogs, since my old dog has been gone.

On our walks he stops in his tracks if even sees another dog approaching. If another dog sniffs him, tail between legs and he would run, if not on lead. He also went for my neighbours dog, who he is familiar with. I’m not sure another dog is the answer?

He has been getting lots of extra fuss, walks etc. I’m wondering if that’s made him even more confused? Maybe I should have carried on as normal?

Cat needs to go to the vets this morning. He has caught the cats eye.

I don’t know what to do other than to separate him from the cats when I’m not about. I think adding another dog to the mix wouldn’t be a good idea. Cats are scared, he is being aggressive etc. Seems a recipe for disaster.

I’m sorry - I’ve got no practical advice, other than to think about talking to a (good) behaviourist. I’d be really concerned if my dog started taking swipes at my cats. His whole world must be upside down. Chat to your vet when you take kitkat in to have his/her eye looked at. Most good behaviourists only work with a vet referral anyway.

Thanks, got an appointment at 12 today.

The ‘pining’ seems to have improved, he is eating normally etc. He seems to have become quite territorial. His body language etc. He slept in his crate last night to give the cats some respite.
