Due to collect puppy in 2 weeks

We’re due to pick up our Labrador puppy in 2 weeks. We’ve visited twice once to visit breeder to check them out and get on their list and once to visit our puppy. Emailed breeder a couple of days ago but not had a reply - they usually reply very quickly. I don’t want to hound them (sorry). But not sure whether this would be usual. Starting to fear the worst. How often would you expect updates from the breeder at this stage?

Well you're picking puppy up in 2 weeks, what more do you need to know?

Lifeontheoceanwave · 26/04/2018 16:02

Well kinkyafro, as the puppy will be an integral part of our family for the next 10-15 years I’d like to know how they’re doing I suppose! Or am I not supposed to show any interest until 8 weeks? A very bizarre attitude. Are you sure you’re not more of a cat person?

Perhaps they're just busy with a growing litter of pups? They've got to be rather time consuming.

Or they may have other life stuff going on. I really wouldn't read too much into it.

UndomesticHousewife · 26/04/2018 16:22

What worst are you fearing? They are probably just busy, the pup is likely just fine.

Lifeontheoceanwave · 26/04/2018 16:23

Thanks avocados hopefully so. I suffer from ptsd so have a tendency to assume the worst. Fingers crossed I’ll hear soon, it’s just it went from updates every few days to silence

I think this is just your anxieties getting the better of you! I'm sure pup is fine and generally causing chaos with its litter mates Wink

I have personal experience of this myself and I would message them saying i want to visit the puppy again and suggesting a time and date, asking for them to get back to you and confirm if this is convenient. If they are a reputable breeder then they will not mind this, they will be used to people wanting to visit their puppies. Obviously, you would have to give them notice, you can't just turn up - they could not have all the owners turning up at once and a constant stream of people coming in and out as this would be disturbing for the mother and puppies. As mentioned previously, they may just be really busy. However, if you still hear nothing I would just turn up on the time and date I had asked to visit and check that everything is still ok. You are right, this puppy is going to be a family member for many years to come and you have every right to check on its welfare.

You're absolutely right OP and should want to check on the puppy.

Ours is eight weeks old this week and comes home next month when it's 12 weeks. I get daily (or near daily) updates from our breeder with photos and/or videos and a little paragraph about how my puppy is doing. Yesterday he videoed them all playing and called him over so I could see how he was.

A good breeder keeps in touch with their clients and wants them to know their pups before bringing them home.
