Does anyone else have one?

PestDog has never been a social butterfly with humans - I'm clearly his first love, swiftly followed by DF who regularly dog sits. Other people who he shows interest in are his trainer / occasional sitter, and my flatmate (but that took about a month, and he's just using him for games of fetch, not cuddles).

Poor DGM keeps trying to buy his love with food and he takes the food but doesn't care about her. He acts like he's never seen DM before in his life. Dog starved strangers on public transport try to attract his attention and he ignores them and will move away if they try to stroke him, while happily taking my cuddles. He doesn't dislike strangers, they're just totally irrelevant to his mind, far more so than any dog I or family and friends have had in the past.

I've put it down to him having had a rather unstable life so far with several owners - but I don't know how common this is.

Interestingly, in the past couple of weeks he's shown interest in about 3 strangers - a man tying his shoes in the park who he ran up to, a friend in the pub he greeted immediately by jumping up and a man in the station he wanted to say hello to. I'm aware he shouldn't be running up to people or jumping up but it's so unusual for him that I think he might be learning to trust again.

Anyway, does anyone else have a dog who chooses to have a small social circle and has it changed over time?

My dog is the same. Had him for about two years and he loved me instantly, took about a month to get used to my husband, is basically ok with young women, hates all older men and most older women, is totally meh about young guys.

A lot of his problems are definitely not helped by the fact that we live in Korea and most people here have no idea how to react to dogs, ie either running away screaming (not joking, he's not a big dog either) or pouncing on them and patting them on the head without asking and shouting 'HELLO HELLO' into their face. Spend half my time telling people to back off cos he gets really freaked out.

Today, for some reason, he galloped over to an older man to say hello, which was really odd behaviour for him and I also wonder if he's starting to be more interested in other people.

I think he's just not very social, which I'm totally cool with.
