Help me find the right hilarious little dog for the kids

I've had dogs since I was little so we are an experienced dog household. DDog passed a few mo the ago and I'm ready to start thinking about a new dog. Our last dog was a rescue and a big working/guarding breed. Whilst he was utterly bomb-proof with the kids he wasn't much fun for them. As we now have two kids under the age of 8 we will need to go to a breeder. They adore next doors JRT but I'm not sure I can quite handle a JRT. I was thinking a border terrier? Any other suggestions?

As long as the dog is for the right reasons and not picked just for being fun for the kids, that's not fair on the dog. I'm not being mean, just concerned about the reasons for the dog's breed. X

Pugs are hilarious imo and great with kids. Reasonable exercise requirements. Need a face wash/wipe weekly or every few days. Avoid walking in extreme hot or cold - if you wouldn't take the kids out in it (barefoot) don't take the pug out in it.

Not sure what that has to do with anything else though as he’s nothing like a JRT or a border terrier.

You sound like somebody who will be dropping a dog of to a rescue centre because it bit the kids really soon.

Jesus, op wants a playful dog for the kids, to be part of the family, it’s really not hard to understand surely. We have a Tibetan Terrier, she’s little but solid, hypoallergenic. The kids adore her and she adores them. We also have a poodle, he is big, a big baby. He’s also great with the kids but is more attached to me.

Our border terrier is no fun for our kids. He only loves me, he's like a cat. Sleeps on my lap whenever he gets a chance. Won't play really but loves walks. When my dd was tiny she put her face right up to his and he bit her.

Tbh, my old black lab is much more fun. He's incredibly kind, loves to fetch and dutifully jumps round obstacle courses in the garden. He's ace. I love my dogs.

Cairn Terriers are playful, incredibly intelligent and loyal - I find mine hilarious !

I interpret 'hilarious' to mean 'playful' which doesn't seem an unreasonable characteristic to look for in a dog. I think you might find much of this is down to the temperament/socialisation of the individual dog, rather than its breed, though. OP might be better off with another rescue where the dog's characteristics will have been assessed.

Our Border is really funny and lively[ and really good with the kids. And always happy to snuggle down to watch telly, so long as the music isn't too stressful- if it is she'll go and hide in her bed until a "nice" programme comes on.

Ofgs, she's stated she's an experienced dog family and can't change the fact that she has 2 kids under 8 and IMO is being sensible searching for a dog suitable for kids under 8.. As a long standing member of my local animal rescue I see no issues with what op is asking.. Calm down.

Don't get a JRT. I have one and he's a pain in the bum with fear aggression tendencies. He gets on well so far with my one year old DS but it does stress me out. I'm not saying all JRTs are like this. I had a lab as a kid. Get one of them.

I think people are being a bit harsh here. As the owner of a hilarious dog I get what you mean op.

I have a Tibetan spaniel, he’s excellent with kids. I also have an Airedale.

I think the OP means she wants a dog that will want to play etc with the children rather than an older or more staid dog who wants to be left alone? I know my in laws had a lovely ex racing greyhound but bless her she just wanted to sleep and to slope around in peace (unless she saw a small animal while on the lead and instinct kicked in!)

We have a border and she is amazing with my little boy. They will happily together, but she is also a lovely chilled dog who will just lie beside him. She is our second border and I would definetly have an other one they are kind gentle dogs.
