I know nothing about dogs - why would one be barking at 1am?

Is it normal to leave your dog outside barking at 1am? Do dogs sleep outside?

I'm psyching myself up to go and knock on the owners door and ask them to bring the dog in overnight if it can't stay quiet but have zero knowledge about dogs and wondering if there is some reason this would be unavoidable?

Its a bit of a jumpy, barky young dog, jumps all over the place and tries to bite its leash etc. Maybe they just get fed up of it chewing stuff inside!

If it's a puppy still it's possible that they're still house training it and need to take it out for a wee at that time.

Hope it's not being left outside all night. Although if it were I imagine you'd hear it barking most of the night not just at 1am.

dameofdilemma · 19/04/2018 13:43

They've had it since before we moved to the street three years ago...would hope it might be trained by now! Doesn't look like a small puppy but maybe Labrador puppies are big...

Its on a lead outside? Tethered? It’s probably a bored neglected former xmas present with lots of bad habits formed which will include barking for attention. It’s possibly hungry or a cat is taunting it or anything really. It’s impossible to know why it would bark. But you would not be unreasonable to request that they prevent it from barking at 1am.

Phone the dog warden. Or the RSPCA. Sounds like neglect.

pigsDOfly · 19/04/2018 14:11

Oh no that's definitely not good, and not a puppy.

Does sound as Zibbidoo says, a neglected bored dog.

You could try the RSPCA but if it's being fed and watered they might not be interested. Agree the dog warden might have a word with them.

If it's barking at night and disturbing you, the council noise control people might also be someone to contact.

Hmmm not sure. a) is the dog tied up out in the garden or do u mean it bites the leash when out on a walk?
b) If it is in the garden then how long is the leash and is it a very heavy metal 1?
c) is it leashed at 1am when barking?

I teather my dog in the garden but he has shelter (large dog kennel with nice big dog pillow), water, food etc and the teather is long enough and light enough for him to explore the whole garden. However, that is only during the day and only in the warmer weather (ie yesterday was the first time this year that's he's been in the garden for more than 10 mins) and I bring him in if it's raining. Tbh I'm pushing the limit on it as it is however my boy prefers to be outside (often won't come in unless raining) and he has canine dementure which means he needs to be teathered as he's started head butting his way though the garden gate and hurting himself, he almost got run over last year 😞.

If your concerned though phone the rspca and they can visit to check. As an owner I would have no problems with a visit unless i was reported for malicious reasons
xx

Ours live inside but occasionally bark at random times in the night if they get behind the curtains on the patio door and ‘see things’ in the garden.

My neighbour's dog suddenly took to barking at night, they eventually discovered he was barking at the street lamp outside. The council had come and changed the bulb and the light was whiter than before. NDN had to put up blackout blinds so the dog couldn't see it.

Kate123cl · 19/04/2018 14:37

DEFINITELY call RSPCA. I don't care what anyone says, dogs should not be left outside overnight regardless whether a puppy or not. It's cruel and unnecessary. Can you see the dog from a window? Does it look fed?

pigsDOfly · 19/04/2018 14:37

That's a good point Idobelieve.

My dog spends most of the evening outside even when it's cold as she likes the cold weather. Even when it's raining lightly she likes to be out or will sit in the open doorway.

At this time of the year it's almost impossible to get her to come in sometimes.

Perhaps try to have a word with your neighbour before speaking to anyone official.

dameofdilemma · 19/04/2018 15:17

Thanks all - it definitely sounds like its outside though I guess it could be inside if they had all their back windows wide open. It didn't sound muffled at all.

I don't think its neglected from what I've seen of it (I can't see into the garden) but a neighbour did say it jumped up at her and tried to bite her face (not aggressively I don't think, playfully) so it probably just hasn't been trained very well.
