Dog barking at next door's dog

Any ideas how to stop this?

I'm a qualified dog trainer/behaviourist and I've dealt with everything from aggression to barking in other people's dogs, but I don't seem to be able to do a thing with my own!

She's a terrier breed, she's very barky at next door's dogs. She can sense them through the fence and because their dogs are in the garden all day, every day until about 11pm, I can't let mine out without incessant barking. Their dogs bark back but they're large and the barks are quieter and deeper.

She's not at all motivated by food or toys. She's brilliantly clicker trained and can do hundreds of tricks and commands, but as soon as she's I'm the garden, all is ignored. I've tried hours of sitting out there with her and training. I've tried literally everything I can think of so I'm posting to see if there's something I'm not thinking of.

She's not bored, is exercised well, lots of toys, another dog to play with etc. It's so frustrating as I'd like to be able to mop my floors without having to put her upstairs!

Oh, I've spoken to next door as well, but they are arseholes not the nicest of people and said it's not their problem. Which it's not, but those poor large breed dogs are never, ever walked. Anyway, help!

Had she met the dogs?

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/04/2018 13:37

No, we've asked if that can happen and they said their dogs are very dog aggressive (not sure how they know that as they never leave their concrete square) so it's a no go unfortunately.

What on earth do you expect the neighbours to do? It’s your problem to deal with surely. If my neighbour came knocking to get me to help them get their dog to stop barking i would think they were odd.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/04/2018 13:59

Where on earth have I said that I expect the neighbours to do anything? I've said that I've spoken to next door to see if they can meet, as sometimes that can help.

I don't "expect" anything of anyone. Certainly not of people who own massive dogs then shut them in a small concrete square of garden for over 12 hours a day. It was a simple, friendly query.

Have you tried bringing her inside every time she starts barking e.g. the fun stops if she barks.

fuzzyfozzy · 18/04/2018 14:03

Mine was a nightmare barking at next doors lovely dog. He would bark, I'd give him a minute then bring him in and tell him off. He could not have cared less, nothing I did worked. Next doors dog sadly dies and mine spent way too long barking at a fence (thicko)
So no help sorry.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/04/2018 14:05

I have. It makes no difference whatsoever, she's not at all bothered by being brought inside unfortunately.

Oh no, fuzzy Grin

I'm not sure how much help I can offer, but we're in a similar situation. Next door has two dogs which are out in the garden a lot of the time. When my two dogs go out there, next door's dogs scratch madly/bark at the fence and hang over the low fence at the bottom of the garden with their heads into our garden. Unsurprisingly this winds our two dogs up and they bark. I have always brought my dogs in as soon as they start barking, which in this weather means going in and out constantly or sitting inside with the doors closed. I know I can't blame next door for my dog's behaviour, but they don't make any attempts at all to stop their dogs barking or hanging over their fence. Grr.

Similar problem, but with neighbours cat. Sits in tree most days in full view of my cat-hating dog.
Dog barks and goes ballistic.
Tried everything I could think of to train him out of it, nothing worked.
Then one day I gave him a large rugby type ball to carry hoping it'd distract him.
RESULT Grin He loves the ball so much he won't put it down. He still tries to bark with it in his mouth but all that comes out is a sort of muffled "oof" which wouldn't bother anyone.
