Puppy with bad wind

ThePoultryLady · 17/04/2018 22:37

Our puppy is 11 weeks old. On dry puppy food recommended by vet. But he's had awful smelling wind today (gross!) - anything we can do to try and minimize this. Could he not be suited to the food we are giving him. Or is it part and parcel of getting used to our new pup?

Is the food grain free?

Wolfiefan · 17/04/2018 23:03

How long have you had the pup? Did you switch slowly from what breeder was feeding? What breed?
And vets recommend what they sell so as to make money. Do your own research.

I would say it's either the food, he's been weaned onto new food too quickly or you just have a gassy pup XD haha not much help sorry

You could try giving him charcoal biscuits.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/04/2018 22:41

What food is it?

missbattenburg · 21/04/2018 09:10

Sounds to me like the food doesn't suit him. Unless there is a medical reason for the vet food I would take a look at allaboutdogfood.co.uk and start looking up an alternative food for the same or better quality. By in small quantitates and be prepared to try a few before you find the right one.

It's also worth understanding the pros and cons of the various food types: dry extruded, cold pressed, raw, wet - so that you can be sure you're feeding something you are totally happy with.

Our last dog had awful wind on a recommended food. We had to change a couple of times before we found something that we were happier with. It can be trial and error, and also take a while, since you should only add 10% of the new food per day and change fully over 2 weeks. Our new dog (same breed) never has wind at all. We continued to feed him on the same food that the breeder used. Notably it has only 3 ingredients - far less chance of sensitivity or reaction. The allaboutdogfood website is good, but set aside plenty of time if you are going to consult it seriously.

Yes agree, it definitely sounds like the food isn't suitable.

A vet recommended a food for my dog some time ago, turned out that whilst the food was an excellent quality - very good I imagine for large, high energy dogs - it was far too rich for my small dog's system and needs and actually caused a few problems for her.

As pp said do your own research.

We had to try a few foods before we found the right one. Interestingly we no longer get the same level of bad smells from BiteyDog now we have cut out all the high fatty treats (dried cows ears and other yummy treats). Now he has just his normal food and dry biscuits he is much better.
