Dreaded diarrhoea

Hi everyone, we have a poop issue. Our pup was toiletting fine, nice firm-ish stools, then we gave him a puppy dentastix. Just one, about the 28th of last month. literally the next time he went, it was runny. And the time after that, without even eating between.

So I figure it upset his tummy. Gave him chicken/rice/scrambled egg variations for the next couple of days and it got a little better so started incorporating his regular food a little at a time. By the 5th it was not better and he'd had mustard coloured poo so called the vets.

They said give nothing but chicken for 4 days then slowly introduce regular food. We're at the stage of no more chicken now but his poo is still mushy, sometimes mucousy, or mustardy, or sometimes a little firm. It's very inconsistent so I've made an appointment for him for monday but has anyone had this, what on earth has happened to his tummy?! It didn't get "normal" even with just chicken which is what bothers me. He's up to date with his worming (drontal), well, due one next week but was definitely up to date when it started, flea treatment up to date too and had all his vaccinations.

My dog is on a very low fat diet for a sensitive stomach and as odd as it sounds she can't take too much plain chicken. Four days of just chicken would result in her having runny poo. I know it's given as the answer to upset stomach but it really doesn't suit all dogs.

Wondering if he'd be better on a food for sensitive stomach until his tummy settles, it's worked very well for my dog.

Hope he get sorted out soon.

Have you tried sweet potato? When my dog has the runs ( dentastixs do that to her too) its the only thing that fixes it

Oh yes, also pumpkin is supposed to be very good too for settling dogs' upset stomachs.

You can get it in pet shops. Holland and Barrett sell pumpkin tablets for dogs.

Our puppy had a bad reaction to her shots and had runny/ bloody poo’s. We had to give her plain chicken and within two days she was ok. We also had to give her an antibiotic in case it was an infection. We feed her a combination of boiled chicken & puppy nuts now and she is doing really well. It might be a good idea to head back to the vets. Your puppy might need an antibiotic.

Chicken intolerance is not uncommon.

Have you tried her with boiled, skinless whitefish instead?

joystir59 · 25/04/2018 20:41

Potato mashed with overcooked rice, mixed with chopped skinless chicken sorted out our dogs bloody diarrhoea

KinkyAfro · 25/04/2018 21:58

My dog's tum not keen on chicken either, we went for plain white fish and rice

strayducks18 · 27/04/2018 22:24

I would stop the chicken and rice and switch to fish. We had a similar issue when ours was a small pup and turns out chicken doesn't agree with him at all.

How old is your pup?

After dietary indescretion (which is usually self limiting), infectious causes are commonly responsible for diarrhoea in young dogs. Giardia (completely treatable) is extremely common. I'd suggest a faecal test....
