How often do you wash your dog?

I have a 2-year-old GSD who probably gets washed once every two weeks. I just had a friend lecture me that this is way too much as it strips is natural oils etc (which I am aware of). However, he gets EXTREMELY muddy on his walks and will take a dip in a muddy puddle any chance he gets. His coat is lovely and he often gets complimented on it. Should I cut back? We've tried just using a washcloth/brushing but that doesn't help with his coat clumping up with mud which he then chews at. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It gets the hose after every walk (Labrador).

We have a long haired dog (Cavalier) and he has a bath about every 6 weeks. He does pick up mud on his feathers and tummy, but we try to towel it off as soon as he gets in and brush out any lumps.

Only if there's been a fox poo rolling incident. Big dog (age 7) has had 3 baths in her life. Smaller dog (age 3) has has 3 baths in her life, plus many wipings down with baby wipes after superficial rolling. Our old dog found a plastic bag full of decomposing rabbits' heads in the woods and rolled in it, he had to have a hosing outside with shampoo, then a bath with shampoo, then another hosing outside with more shampoo. He smelled a bit better after that but he wasn't impressed!

chipsandpeas · 09/04/2018 21:10

bout every 6 months unless hes rolled in something stinky

Buttercupsandaisies · 09/04/2018 21:11

I have a cockapoo who has a full bath and blow every other day! She loves it! She runs off lead everyday in a muddy field though so it's a necessity

DramaAlpaca · 09/04/2018 21:12

A proper bath only when they've rolled in fox poo.

A hose down regularly after a muddy walk.

RoseyOldCrow · 09/04/2018 21:12

Our large, long haired dog gets v muddy & sandy too (we can't win, rain or shine!) so it's every 2-3 weeks. Done in the bath & with chamomile & tea tree gentle shampoo; he has a lovely coat (& no fleas!) He loves it & I really enjoy the special time bonding with him.

I used to have a chocolate lab who only had 2 baths in her entire life. Current dog is a cocker spaniel who is an avid fox poo roller/dirty ditch swimmer and hole digger who has to have a full bath after every blinking walk Hmm. I am SO over mud this winter, and am waiting for decent dry weather with baited breath.

Golden retriever washed about twice a year. I would do it more but he’s really heavy and it hurts my back to lift him into the bath. I don’t want to wash him outside as it’s too cold and I’m a bit PFD Grin

villainousbroodmare · 09/04/2018 21:15

About every two weeks. Beds at the same time or more often. His coat is fabulous. I hate that "doggy" smell.

MrsEricBana · 09/04/2018 21:16

I don't have a dog but this has made me laugh! We are thinking of getting a dog. Where do you actually wash them?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 09/04/2018 21:16

Ooh rosey have you a link for the shampoo? Sounds lovely.

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 09/04/2018 21:18

Mine has never been bathed (14....) If he gets unbearably stinky he gets a swim in the river or a play with the hosepipe! He never gets shampoo though, and he has a lovely coat (lab cross collie)

villainousbroodmare · 09/04/2018 21:20

In the bath or shower.

Hoppinggreen · 09/04/2018 21:22

Golden Retriever, never been washed but gets a hose down if very muddy

bigsighall · 09/04/2018 21:22

Only when he’s rolled in fox poo so about 3 times a week Angry

missyB1 · 09/04/2018 21:23

Throughout this very bloody long and wet muddy winter it’s been about once a week. Hoping once the ground dries up a bit it will be a lot less.

VioletCharlotte · 09/04/2018 21:39

All The Bloody Time. I have a Springer who likes to roll in everything stinky, so have no choice to wash him. I know it's not great for them, but I haven't really got a choice. I can't have in my house smelling of rotting pigeon Grin

BrigitsBigKnickers · 09/04/2018 21:42

I have a sheltie who has a bath every 2 months or so although this depends on the weather as she is one of these really strange creatures who will happily sit in the middle of our garden in the pouring rain which cleans her coat beautifully!

missbattenburg · 09/04/2018 21:44

Springer who has lots of feathering and goes for muddy walks twice a day... he gets a shower once a month. Everything else is dealt with using towels, brushing and washing his bedding plenty.

tabulahrasa · 09/04/2018 21:46

If he smells... so maybe once or twice a year?...

I just brush mud off.

Rogue1234 · 09/04/2018 21:46

My one comes in from a walk, jumps straight in the bath and waits for me to come in and wash her!

Also looking forward to drier weather, I hate having to hose her down every day.

LittleRedWagon1 · 09/04/2018 21:50

Only when she’s rolled in something disgusting or stinky. She’s 14months old and has had 3 baths altogether, 2 fir pooping in her crate as an 8/9 week old and 1 last week for rolling in fox crap 🤢🤮

She’s a Doberman and is big, powerful and heavy. At 8/9 week old it was easy peasy. At 14months old it was all hands on deck 🤣

DancingLedge · 09/04/2018 21:52

Stinky dog/ dusty dog / moulting dog > river.

Throw stick. Dog jumps in and retrieves. Call dog back. Repeat.
15 times+ for fox poo.
Otherwise, until I'm bored.
Done.

Moonflower12 · 09/04/2018 21:55

I love that it is all the spaniels who need a bath 'every time they roll in something stinky'! Our spaniel has had loads of baths due to her rolling habits!
