Gunky eye

Looking for opinions please - dpup (9.5 month old mini schnauzer) had some discharge from his eye the last two days which I put down to dust / grit (we’ve been away for a couple of days and he did loads of walking on trails with a lot of loose stones and dust) but today he woke up with his eyebrows over half his eye and all glued down with ‘gunk’ and the half I can see is quite red. We’ve got the vet tomorrow for a checkup and I’d planned to get his eye checked out then but not sure if I should phone the emergency vet / bath him to try clean his eye a bit / stick to original plan and wait until tomorrow.
Has anyone else had something similar? Should I be more worried? I’m still inclined to think it’s just got dirt inside but don’t want to downplay if it’s potenitally serious 😳

Have you been bathing it for the last couple of days? If not get cooler boiled water on it. If the eye appears to be causing discomfort i would not wait til tomorrow!

It sounds like conjunctivitis which can probably wait until tomorrow. Bathe it with some warm water until you see the vet.

Whenever I have contacted our vet for eye issues to get a routine appointment they have always said to phone back if his eye effectively gets worse e.g. stuck closed which is what you are describing. Personally I would not take the risk with eyes and would phone the out of hours vets given how bad you have described it.

Thanks everyone, I spoke to the on call vet and described everything that was happening / had happened and she is happy to wait until he goes tomorrow morning anyway to get it checked out. Think it is conjunctivitis rather than an injury.

That's good. Hope it gets sorted tomorrow.
