Pup with worms, some advice!

We've recently adopted a pup. He was wormed by the breeder at 8 weeks when I brought him home then I've wormed him Tuesday past when he was just shy of 12 weeks as advised by the vet. He'll be wormed monthly until he gets to 6 months old. We've not had any worms until today. He seemed a bit off colour, off his food, not as playful and was sick a couple of times but still having normal poos. This evening though he did a poo and it had a massive roundworm in it Envy - not envy! Anyway he seems brighter now and is back to playing and eating. Has anyone else experienced their pup being unwell like this because of worms? Also, is it normal for them to have worms after their first wormer? He hasn't been anywhere or near anything he could've caught them from as he can't be walked until next week due to vaccinations. I'm a a little worried about him. Any advice?

Take to vets would be my advice

I think some breeders use Bob Martin type wormers rather than stuff that works. Worm him yourself with some decent stuff. I found a website ages ago called something like wormcount.com and you can send poo off and they give you a report saying what worms they have. So any new dog I’ve had I’ve wormed them, then sent poo off to make sure I’ve got rid of everything.

And last dog I had from a breeder was riddled with worms including something which was quite rare......hook worms I think?

I've wormed him Tuesday past with a wormer from the vets and he'll have monthly worming until 6 months old. Just thought it was strange he had a live worm in his poo after 2 rounds of worming. He's absolutely fine now but I was worried as he was really unwell the day he passed the worm and was unsure if worms made them sick like that?

Seeing worms in the poo mean the wormer is working. I expect the breeder used an ineffective wormer.

Always use a wormer from your vet. Never from a pet shop or supermarket- they don't work.

Carry on with the monthly worming using the vet's wormer. If he's unwell next time, speak to your vet. The wormer might not be agreeing with him.

Puppies should be wormed monthly until 6 months of age and then every 1-3 months thereafter.

I'm going to mention to the vet at his next weigh and worm appnt and see if they'll give me a different wormer in case that's what it was. I have the worming card from the breeder and it was a vet wormer she used but a different kind. We have a plan with the vets where we pay a monthly fee and we get all worming, flea treatment, vaccines, check-ups and nail trimming included so he's covered for it all being done regularly.
