Walking the dog with a baby

Ddog is awesome (if I do say so myself) and we are going to do our up most to keep him happy with the baby arrives (people will be told to say hi to him first, lots of cuddles etc). What I can't work out is how to do his walks with the baby, first 2 weeks dp can take him until I'm up to it as it's likely to be an ELCS but i would like to join them when I can

What do you do about food and nappies on a walk? Ddog only need about a 45 min walk a day now he's middle aged. Also i would rather use a sling but is it easier with a pram?

I wouldnt take much for 45 min walk. You can change when you get back home. Place feeds either before or after. Ive had to deal with hungry baby out and about and its no fun when you need to feed them at home.

I vary sling or pram. Depends how i feel. I walk dog daily although picking up dog poo with a sling can be tricky but you get the hang of it.

I stuck my ds in a sling every walk pretty much ... took nothing out with me (nappy change before walk)... also c-section I started with smaller walks to build strength. Dh took dog out before and after work... after 4 weeks I would do a walk alone when dh came home for some alone time!

Definitely try sling - much more mobile etc than pram. Although if your dog just needs a short turn around a park then pram would be fine for that.
For short walks you can just feed/change then head out - baby will probably sleep for the whole walk in sling! When they are older or if you are doing longer walks i used to take a rucksack with a few bits in and enjoyed stopping somewhere for a feed etc if the weather was nice.

We have 2 dogs that are our world, can't wait for them to meet their new sister!

We will be walking them with baby in sling/carrier - one of us will have baby and the other will be controlling the dogs (they pull a lot for such little things!)

I'd not thought about feeding/changing tbh but we're only out about 30 mins at a time so guess it's a case of feeding before we go out and waiting for changes till we get back.

Good luck with it all Smile

Ok so just time it well but go basically with nothing extra (well except baby and baby carrying device of some form). That's great as we will be bottle feeding so was thinking of how much to take etc

Ddog is great at just standing still when you're picking up poo......although I'm not sure how I'd do that on my own with baby in sling, hmmm

Thanks for the advice Smile

Forgot to say, if you don't want to spend money on a new lead, fashion your own version by threading the lead handle through a belt. Obviously you'll need to be healed from the c-sec first and wear it high or low to avoid the c-sec site.

I fed and changed just before walks. DD was usually asleep in the sling by the end of the street.

I wasn't up for it by two weeks though, DH walked her before and after work until I was.

Nowthereistwo · 28/03/2018 20:21

When home alone I timed the walk for their nap in the sling. Also would take the dogs out be myself when husband was home - a bit of peace

We're very lucky here and have a perfectly flat walk we can drive to so I'm hoping that will be the answer for the first few weeks when I can get out. Plenty of benches too so if I get exhausted dp can keep going then pick me up on the way back

Glad to here it's easily manageable!

Walking the dog with a baby is the easy but because you can just put the baby in a sling. The hard bit comes a bit later when your toddler varies between walking at snails pace, or running off in the opposite direction to the dog 😉

Just don't do too much post partum. I thought i was fine for a ten min walk to shop at 2 weeks and a passed loads more blood as part of lochia. Listen to your body.
