What bed does our puppy need?

We are due to collect our cockapoo puppy next week and still haven’t bought anything.
The breeder has recommended the RAC crate but I wasn’t sure what kind of bed to put in it. Any advice very welcome.

Puppies tend to be very comfortable on minimal bedding. I found having 3 or 4 identical pieces of vet bed meant I could easily switch them out when they got soiled. I threw an old towel in there too, just to help keep him snuggly.

Anything fancy will get peed, pood and chewed multiple times before the pup grows up. Don't waste your pennies as pups are expensive enough as it is. Wait until he is bigger before getting him a decent bed.

Forgot to add - easy switching out is of particular advantage at 2am when you just want to go back to bed and sleep

I have an mattress that keeps in heat on the bottom of ours and then a primark dressing gown rather than a dog bed. Cat beds can work whislt they are puppies - I had an igloo one when he was a puppy.

Totally agree with other suggestions. We went with one of the small oval beds and got some fleece blankets and towels to make it snuggly but they could also be easily washed and changed in case of accidents.
For the first 4-5 nights our pup slept in a cardboard box with blankets in by our bed and she was very happy in that. You definitely don't need anything fancy.

We had a plastic basket once older, with a washable cushion but vet bed to start with inside the crate. Recommend the brownish ( more forgiving )rather than the standard white colour.

Puppies chew and a lot will destroy beds when very young Grin

Not a bed as such but we just got a couple of pieces of ‘vet bed’ (furry dog friendly material) to go in our dogs crate we fold it over (as that was what ours had when we went to pick him up as a puppy). We just use one piece at a time when one is in the wash. He is 6 and a half now and it’s still going strong (still looks ok and it has a paw print 🐾 on). Sometimes h takes it outside to lay in the sun on, on the grass and if our rugs in the wash he bring it out to lay on to avoid laying on our cold Karndean floor.

ScreamingValenta · 27/03/2018 21:49

We used a plastic basket (easily cleaned and cheap to replace when chewed) lined with blankets (again, easily changed and washable). Once he became a 'young adult' he was happy to sleep anywhere!

Thanks all. I really don’t think I can persuade dh to let pup sleep in our room!!
Hadn’t thought about folding the pieces of vet bed over as I couldn’t find a piece to fit the crate.
Any recommendations on where to buy?

Sorry another probably stupid question, if the puppy isn’t allowed outside for the first few weeks until after 2nd vaccination, how can they do the toilet outside?
I’ve read about bringing them home and everything says they will need a wee to take them to the designated spot in the garden...

The risk is of picking up infections from other dogs, so you can let a pup into your garden to wee/poo, but not take it out for walks in public. You can take them outside in public to start socialising them, if you can carry them and avoid contact with the pavement.

Pets at home sell vet bed and you can cut it easily to size.

Puppies are needy ( and sooo cute) I would make a plan and stick to it. You will need to toilet break it in the night, pick it up and take it straight outside. Ours always poo’d if I let it step foot outside it’s crate. He slept in the lounge as a pup ( different house) but now sleeps in his basket in our bedroom without a crate.

We only used the crate til about 6 months.

I have a plastic travel pet crate for mine with a bit of vet bed in the bottom. Means I can lock him in for the night. He loves it and clambers in voluntarily anytime after 9pm if he goes out for a wee. We use the same crate to transport him in the car. He has a lovely fluffy dog bed in my office, an old doormat in the kitchen and will lie anywhere in the living room.

Vet bed and crate ordered. Thank you
