Cars suitable for dogs

mckenzie · 19/03/2018 15:46

I’ve always had 4x4 type cars since we’ve had the dog but I would really like to go for a smaller car now.
Our dog isn’t not big (Tibetan terrier) but I do sometimes have other dogs in my car (labrador size) so need a boot big enough for both.

Also, I might take the dog to the coast so the boot needs to be big enougb for him to be comfortable for a long journey as well as a quick trip to the park.

Any recommendations very gratefully received.
TIA

I've got golden retriever and a Black Lab.
We've always had estate cars: Mondeo, BMW 5 series, Mercedes C220, VW Golf.

All fit both dogs in perfectly.

Thanks for the reply but sadly my current car struggles to make the turn on our driveway so I know that an estate car would fail totally.

My Kia Ceed estate has almost as good a turning circle as my last VW golf did and has a boot big enough for three larger than average labs for short journeys or two if they are in the car for a long period of time.

Failing that, Is putting the seats down for longer journeys with the lab an option? If so then a small VW (Polo or Fox) would be my choice. If

Is it just for you, plus passenger And dogs?

I ask, because I have always had 4x4s, DH has 4 x 4 too, as we live very rural - he actually needs his, I just liked mine😮

Mine died 8 months ago and I bought a Hyundau i10. A teeny tiny scrap of a thing, £30 road tax, runs on fumes.

My back seats are down permanently, i only have drivers seat and passenger seat. The whole back end is full of labradors (2), balls (209812), and towels for muddy paws (3).
Absolutely no,problems at all and very very cheap 😊

Oh, having said that, shite handling on icy, untreated lanes, but we just walk from home then!

My dogs go on the back seats harnessed in. Boots are crumble zones and I won't put any living creature in the boot. Sorry to not contribute the kind of answer you want but I drove past the same make and model of car car with the boot completely caved in once and I did some research and have never put mine in the boot since.

Thanks for the replies
Ddog wears a harness anyway. I wonder what I would need to add to it to make it suitable to use in the back seat of the car.

If you want to go smaller, look at the Mini clubman.

If you would like the dog in the boot there are crash tested crates. The website and Facebook page is called safedog and the Facebook page has a picture from a recent accident which shows how the crate works and keeps the dog safe.

I have a Peugeot 308 which has been great. Deceptively big boot for a small car which comfortably fits our big collie and a terrier.

Also most harnesses aren't suitable in an accident. The best rated car seat harness is the sleepypod clickit harness.
