Diabetic, blind and not doing well :(

My 8 year old mixel is rapidly going downhill with Type one diabetes (2x day insulin) and has gone blind. The vet (the best in town) want to do an eye evaculation but I wonder is it just prolonging and adding to the pain . He's eating and drinking and manages bumpy walks but it's clearly an effort. I have to accept there is no recovery but would like to hear some happy tales of similar situations.
If he does have to go to guard to pearly gates, what do I tell my children?
:(

Better a day too soon than a day too late. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this

We lost our lab a few weeks ago after a diabetes diagnosis at the end of the summer.

Our vet also mentioned an eye evacuation but it seemed very cruel to us.

She just got to the stage where she couldn't control her bladder, she went off her food and her eyes were bulging in het head.

The vet came to our house and she got to stay in her favourite spot.

It's not an easy decision to make, but for us, it was the right one.

Is she still enjoying life? That's always the acid test for me.

With regards to the children, I'd start involving them now - are they aware of how unwell she is? I'd be talking about death / euthanasia as an abstract concept and once introduced give it a few days and then introduce it as a concept relating to old / sick dogs like yours. Better to introduce the topic slowly rather than have it come as a sudden shock. I still remember the moment I was told the family dog had died when I was small - totally different set of circumstances and a shock to us all, but I'll always remember it as there was no preparation for it happening

Thanks for the replies. It's nice to be amongst dog friends. At the moment life is still enjoyable for the poor thing .Still trying to get into the bin and find any long lost toast crust beneath the sofa, wagging tails and looking for love and cuddles . I think I'll start talking to the kids and try to sow seeds so they don't think it's a selfish choice when the pain overtakes the joy.
I do remember all my childhood pets assisted passings were at home and I'll start investigating if that can be done by the local practice
