I have a 1 Year old ESS boy. He is my first ever dog and I absolutely adore him. He is always so happy, his tail never stops . He is funny and cuddly, silly and loving. This is all really. I would love to hear about your ESS and are you happy with your choice of breed ? I think they are the best ! Am I biased ?

I have an 8 month old ESS. My very first family dog as a child was one and a close friend of the family bred/showed/judged them back in the 70s/80s and still had the last generation as pets when I was young. They were all such wonderful dogs around children and I would always be found with one of the dogs (sometimes just sat in their bed with them).

I have loved the breed ever since and, for me, they define what dogs are.

I haven't had one since - we had further dogs but all were rescue so different breeds. When I decided to get a dog (my first 'own' dog for many years) it had to be a Springer.

I adore him. He is all kinds of mad and so much trouble sometimes but he is also everlastingly friendly and enthusiastic for life, funny and loving. He is happy from the moment the alarm goes off in the morning until the last moment of the day when he lollops off to sleep.

Right now he is snoozing behind me after a full on morning but I just know if I stood up and said "right, let's go and do something", he'd be up and ready to go in an instant.

There are a number of other breeds I like and would happily have if I were to get another dog. But this breed (and this dog) are very special to me indeed.

p.s. that tail, though! Back when I was young all springers were docked so we never had one with a tail. This springer's tail is both a dangerous weapon of mass destruction and a wonder to behold Grin

Aw ! What a lovely post missbattenburg . I agree, they are just amazing. If I have to describe them in 3 words it would be : Happy, happy and more happy Smile

I can't join in because I have a cocker and not a springer but just wanted to say we have a full tail and it's magnificent especially when he is in happy hunting mode (I am surprised he doesn't take off when it's swishing frantically from side to side Grin)

My chocolate and white old boy is 14. We bought him from farmers so his tail was docked Sad
He is getting a bit frail now but refuses to accept he can't leap like he used to so we have to grab him to stop him trying. He is stone deaf and a bit grumpy to wake up but as soon as he sees us, he is as full of joy as ever.
He initially hated our introduction of a Spanish Water Dog pup three years ago but now relies on him as his ears.
I am living in dread of losing him. The SWD came straight from his Mum and sleeps on top of our Springer every night and DD2 cannot remember a time without him.

I have 2 ESS, both liver and white. The older one is 12.5, she's the best natured dog I have ever had, and grew up with the children, always perfectly behaved with them. Her tail is docked, but always wagging. She is now very deaf and arthritic but still likes to play with our 2 year old who is very cute and has a full tail. Both working dogs, with beautifully soft mouths and both so happy, the older one doesn't really hunt these days but still loves to carry her ball around, the younger one just loves to be busy. Both, by springer standards, are relatively calm, however and are happy to sit quietly at home whilst I work, but always keen to go out as well.

They have given me huge amounts of pleasure and happiness over the years.

We've got a 9-month-old Springer, and while he's mad as a box of frogs, we're utterly besotted. He's so energetic and playful, ball-obsessed and mischievous.

My gran always had Springers when I was young so even though we never set out to get one, when he appeared, it felt right. I thought, having spent a lot of time with my gran's dogs as a kid, that we knew what we were letting ourselves in for. I was very wrong about that.

But honestly, he's the best. I miss him when I'm at work and he's such a joy to come home to. Best cure for a bad day in the office is taking him to the beach in the evening (we live in Brighton) and throwing balls for him.
