...If you have a new puppy who hasn't had vaccinations yet but you need to go out for an appointment?

How long are you going to be out for?

Could someone watch puppy for you?

Do you have a dog carrier you could use so pup can come with you but not on the floor?

Have you crate trained and if so has puppy been fine being left alone for short periods?

Thanks for your reply. We haven't got puppy yet we will be picking up in a few weeks. Just planning ahead... we do have a crate. I don't work but there will obviously be times when I need to go out before puppy has had injections.

You leave the puppy in the crate.

BiteyShark · 09/03/2018 10:16

If it's a short time and puppy is fine in crate then you can leave them in the crate. If your appointment is a long one I would get someone to watch them.

If you can carry puppy with you then I would do that as you get them used to the sounds and sights outside the house which you need to do anyway.

What's the difference if he did have his vaccinations? You wouldn't be able to take him into the doctors/solicitors/hairdressers/school anyway would you? And you couldn't leave such a young puppy tied up alone outside.

littlemisscomper · 09/03/2018 10:22

But yeah, I defo recommend crate training. Have a good play first so he's nice and tired, and take him out for a wee just before you leave.

littlemisscomper · 09/03/2018 10:22

Oh, and take his collar off before leaving him in the crate unattended.

CMOTDibbler · 09/03/2018 14:52

Mine go in their crate, and have a snooze while I'm out. Just as they will when they are vaccinated

cremecaramelmmm · 09/03/2018 15:21

Ok thanks all, I wasn't sure how long I can leave puppy if I didn't take him out with him not having had his vaccinations.

We take ours and leave him in his box in the car. We've worked up to being able to leave him for 30 mins in the car and he is fine. It is winter here. This week I am aiming to get him used to being left in his crate in the house. When he first came home at 8 weeks old he was happy in his travel box but way to nervous for the large crate we'd bought. Last week I put the large crate in the office with me and him and out his downstairs bed and a water bowl in there and he hopped in and out at will. This morning I waited until he'd gone in there to sleep and quietly closed the door (he saw me do it!) and then left the room for a few minutes. I opened the door when I got back and he was fine. I'll repeat a few times during the day and every day this week for increasing intervals. I am aiming to be able to leave him for 2 hours in his crate. It's likely only once per week he'd be left that long (if at all) but there are the odd evenings when kids activities and mine clash and taking the dog along is tough. Until now I've rearranged so he doesn't have to be left longer than the time for me to get out of the car and nip in the shop for 5mins and then back but would like a bit more flexibility. We had an evening out arranged the week after he came home and my parents came to our house to dog sit.

When mine was a pup I put her crate at the far end of the hall with the door open and wedged a large piece of board between the walls so I could put a couple of puppy pads down to save her peeing in the cage. Just had to make sure the board was high enough that she couldn't climb over.
Worked well, although it was only on a couple of occasions for two or three hours max.
