She is a 10 year old jack Russell who has occasionally chewed her nails, but this last few weeks she’s got really bad.

She’s fit and healthy , Walked regularly but not for as long as she once was as she’s not enjoying long walks.

DH works from home a lot so has company.

She chewed 1 nail do much it’s bled, we have put a collar on to stop her. She’s up to date on flea and worm treatment.

Doesn’t seem in any distress or upset.

Any ideas?

Salt and grit can irritate paws. Have you been washing them when you come back in from walks?

My guess would be it's either something her paws are touching that is irritating her (like road salt as PP said) or something she is eating she is allergic to.

Food allergies can develop as dogs get older and can cause nibbling and scratching of the paws, legs, ears, anus, mouth (or any combination of those).

Anecdotally, we have a then-11-year-old JRT who started nibbling his legs all the time - about half way up the leg. Stopped feeding him chicken/eggs in food or treats and he stopped nibbling within a week or so.

Accidentally fed him egg not so long after we realised what it was and within 24 hours he started nibbling again.
