Dog flap advice

Hi all,

New puppy has been here nearly 4 weeks and toilet training is going well however going forwards I think it would be easier if he could go in and out the back door at will (I know I'll be standing in the garden for a few more months yet but in the longrun he should just head out by himself). Anyone else got a dog door / dog flap? Does your dog use it ok? Best to introduce it when they are little so they get used to it or wait until he learns to tell me he needs a wee?

I toyed with having one but the security risks put me off. Sorry not very helpful I know.

They are a security risk for your house and the dog - theft of dogs from gardens is a massive problem

I have managed to get into someone’s house through a dog flap. How big is the dog likely to get?

Dog is a Bichon Frise so wouldn’t need a huge flap. Back garden not visible from road so hopefully less dog napping!

theives have got in houses on our street through a CAT flap. Obviously the people don't get in through a cat flap...they can access the door lock etc.

If they can do that with a cat flap, I don't hold much hope for a dog flap.

It will actually hinder his progress as he wont learn to hold his wee and/or signal to you when he needs to go.
There is also a huge risk of theft, and dogs that have access outside end up being investigated for barking complaints as the dog goes outside and barks at anything that moves.
I would advise against.

I have a dog flap. Extra large, for a big dog.

It took her a while to get used to it (got her as an adult rescue), but now she goes in and out 24/7.

It’s a lifesaver as it gives her access to the whole garden and the house at any time.

Not worried about security issues.
