Tell me your breed and how much exercise your dog gets daily :)

Thanks!

We have a working and show cocker plus an OES and they get about an hour in the morning off lead in the forest or at the beach, then in evening it's a 20m lead walk around the roads in the winter and in the summer they get about 45m off lead in the forest and sometimes during the day they will get a lunch time walk if i don't have much on. They would walk all day if I had the time lol

totoromama · 28/02/2018 07:21

Shiba Inu- 11/2hr in morning , 1 hr lunchtime, 11/2 HR evening and 2 30 mins walks later on in the evening. So about 5 hours a day? We have a 30m lead so they can run around as much as possible.

Eric is a small poodle cross, he will walk for as long and as often as you'd like but he generally gets 90 minutes morning and evening and 20 minutes before bed. At weekends he probably gets an extra hour on top at least as well.

TattyTshirt · 08/07/2018 01:57

8 month old Cocker/Poodle cross. She gets 30 minutes run around with similar sized dog friends early morning, around 30 min on lead walk early afternoon, but not in this heat, and 20/30 min evening.

We also do brain games, training, tricks and scent work daily.

We do longer walks on weekends when we visit the beach, nature reserves and group walks in various woods.

Greyhound, a three year old ex-racer.

45-60 minutes in the morning and the same in the afternoon/evening. Off lead, with most of it a gentle snuffle around/squirrel stalk/social sniff and play with other dogs. but she’ll usually have a session of mad zoomies one of the walks. In this heat we’ve sometimes been cutting short the evening walk.

I seem to remember we got a greyhound because of the 20 minute, twice a day thing. That didn’t work!

OP when dogs are young then walks should not be as long, the guidance you've read is reasonable. Young dogs are developing and too many walks stress their joints etc. One of my dogs a very active breed when very young, hard to tire her out on walks without walking her too much. So in between walks played games, gave Kongs, did training sessions, to provide mental stimulation. Also bought toys specifically designed for that like the Nina Otteson ones. But can also do cheaply, so would hide things around the garden and teach 'seek', put treats under containers for dog to sniff out. Only upped walk levels when older - check with vet. Then did a three-hour outdoor training course weekly, including agility and tracking. A daily off-lead run in local park/woods, plus a daily half-hour walk later in the day around the local area, and a daily training and games session.

Dottierichardson · 09/07/2018 04:48

Also other dog was a much less active breed so did short walks plus games training when developing. Later two 20-minute walks a day fine plus games and training. Also came to park for off-lead run about twice a week as walks as much about stimulation/socialising/something to think about as they are about exercise. Always depressed by neighbour's small dog who is never taken out, just sits in the window looking bored and yapping a lot.

As dogs got older less into running around, but still go to park and they ambled/amble rather than mad dashs.

7 month old Bichon Frise. We have long walks but don't get very far! He gets 2 walks (one morning and 1 evening) and we are out about 30 - 60 minutes each time but we go down the river and he is normally off lead in fields / woods. He splashes in the water and sniffs a lot. We practice sit and recall. He chases butterflies and stands for ages watching cows. Sometimes he spends 20 minutes digging in the sandy river bank. Yesterday it was sheep hypnosis!... I could do the distance of our longest walk in about 20 minutes if I didn't have that wooly footed slow coach along too!
He also gets a 5 minute pee walk before bed as otherwise he won't go and wakes me up to go out at 5am.
I think he needs / enjoys the stimulation of the walk far more than he needs to go far. If he wants a run he gallops about like a loon and woofs at me. mostly though he just sniffs and pees on flowers!

adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:39

Working Cocker spaniel (5months currently)
We do an off lead walk each day (usually around 40-60mins) in the woods/ Park or on the sand at the the beach. Then just a boring round the block jaunt for 20 mins usually in the morning or evening.

We are just starting with a dog walking company so they'll take him out midday for 2hrs with other puppies 5 days a week whilst my OH is at work (just started new job) & I'm studying. (In September)

CMOTDibbler · 09/07/2018 15:43

I have two lurchers, and foster lurcher puppies. I'd reduce what yours is getting in terms of formal walks and spend more time on training in the garden and working on recall there as an hour is a long time for a pup to walk on the lead.

goldspotty · 09/07/2018 16:02

One dog with arthritis, he gets carried in a dog backpack a lot. He gets only on lead walks because of his joints, 20 minutes and then he's usually standing at your feet looking to get picked up.

Other dog is a spaniel and he gets a few hours a day. He never runs out of energy. Hiding treats in the yard is a good idea. He has a number of kongs but is so quick to work them out.

lennyisnuts · 09/07/2018 16:19

I have a really lazy 2 year old Cockapoo. He goes against the standard description of a cockapoo which is usually energetic.
He can run and walk for miles but he would never choose toGrin.
So at the minute it's too hot for him and he just likes to sleep and eat but usually we will do 45 mins to an hour daily. Sometimes half an hour if he turns around and head home whilst I'm still up front leading the way!
He's asleep right now. He loves sleeping and snores very loudly!

I’m sure these marathon-running dogs are not typical. Few owners have time for hours of walks daily. Walking our Spaniel I got to know many others and the usual routine was about half an hour once or twice a day, depending on the weather.

TheLastNigel · 10/07/2018 05:57

2 x jack russell here. 15 mins morning, hour and a half with Dog walker midday, twenty mins to an hour (weather and time dependant) of an evening (and they also tear around the house after one another half the time)

bluetongue · 10/07/2018 11:52

18 month old whippet. He goes to all day daycare twice a week where he runs in a big field with other dogs. Apart from that on other weekdays he sometimes only gets a 20 minute brisk walk around the block depending on the weather. He usually has a chance to have a decent run on the beach or at a park on the weekend.

Very occasionally if I have a lazy at home day he won’t go for a walk at all but that doesn’t happen very often.
