Puppy had new heart murmur

Just taken 9 week old Pup (from KC registered and inspected breeder) to vets for health check and jabs. Vet said there was a heart murmur. Vet Quite dismissive and not forthcoming with anymore information.
We have certificate of health and KC insurance (5 weeks cover) from breeder but we organised petplan from the date we picked him up.

My friend who is a vet has offered to listen tomorrow and organise scan if necessary.

Has anyone any experience of this?

I’m really worried. We are all so attached to him in less than a week but i’m not sure about taking on a dog with what could prove (if scan confirms a congenital heart defect) to be a life shortening illness. I can’t imagine the awfulness of potentially losing a young dog and I can’t put my children through that.

Sorry

I guess question is who should pay for scan? I assume it will be breeders insurance? I also assume pet plan may now refuse to insure us....

This is an awful situation OP, I really feel for you
What will the breeder do with him if you return him?

Bigfoot1 · 25/02/2018 12:48

I’m going to wait until Tues then ring the breeder. We have a full contract and she has already offered to have him back. I have no idea what she would do with him and if she was just going to PTS (if defect severe) then I’m not sure I could send him back but as DH pointed out if the defect is severe he’s Not going to be the family pet we need him to be and indeed wanted. We actually wanted to be going out for decent length walks and we want to take him on holiday with us etc etc.
He’s currently running round the kitchen like a lunatic and you wouldn’t guess there’s anything wrong with him at all. He’s really thriving here and has gained a good amount of weight.
I’m still in my heart, hoping this turns out to be one of those weird sighthound athletic murmurs (murmurs sound loud because of the chest shape) and if that is the case, I could ring pet plan and they might still insure him.
I have everything crossed. He’s otherwise the perfect dog and appears to really have adapted to our way of life (although he’s bloody naughty with a right penchant for my nice boots!!!)

The reason I asked OP was that something similar happened to a friend of mine and the breeder planned to have the puppy put to sleep.
My friend kept him but it’s been heartbreaking and very very expensive

I know. This is what I fear.....

So echo done on our 9 week old (no sedation required bless him!)
Outcome is thickwalled left ventricle (not unusual in sighthounds) ejection velocity top end of normal (borderline)
Murmur coming from turbulence in LV (aortic valve looks normal)
Recommended echo in 3 and 12 months
Differential growth may reduce turbulence.

Anyone any experience? The guy that did this sounded pretty knowledgeable about sighthounds and was very helpful.

This was what greeted me at the vets when I arrived to pick him up! 😂

Interestingly you can opt for a policy on KC where you only pay an excess and 0% of the claim and get 7.5k per year. It’s £5 per month more expensive than petplan.
With that he’s covered for everything.
Interestingly the diagnosis here may end up being “incidental murmur” and the cardiologist said today that if his echo is stable at 12 months he can issue a statement to that effect and that would probably be the time to switch...
I interpreted the echo as good news!

Hello, I just wondered where you got this little whippet puppy from as this is exactly what has happened to us with exactly the same dates. I literally have exactly the same story to tell...it’s a little weird

bluetongue · 11/03/2018 08:01

He’s adorable. Glad to hear the results were not too bad.

I don’t think I could return him either. My own whippet puppy has had his own issues (anxiety) that have ended up costing me a considerable amount of money. I do feel very protective of him though and he’s a dear little thing (also very naughty at times!).

My vet told me my dog had a heart murmur. Next time i went a different vet said he didn't and was just nervous because he was at the vets!

I had a boxer puppy with aortic stenosis, we didn’t have massive vet’s bills. He just had to take a tablet every day.
