Another Question Dog Lovers :D - What dry dog food?

WheelyCote · 22/02/2018 20:00

My mind is bambuzzled by all the dog foods. Im told I need to look for a high protein food. But looking at those foods....they'd only need a few hundred grams a day. Surely a few hundred grams wouldnt fill a dog for a day?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

allaboutdogfood.co.uk has independent reviews of almost all major dog foods on the UK market. Have a look for a comparison of quality/cost.

Different foods suit different dogs but some well regarded ones include:

Millies Woldheart
Aatu
Akela
Canagan
Eden
Orijen

There are plenty of other good brands also.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 22/02/2018 20:22

they'd only need a few hundred grams a day

Depends on the size of the dog. My little one (6kg) is on a food (Markus Muhle) that he allegedly only needs 72g of per day. In reality he's a furry bundle of energy so needs more and never puts an ounce on, but YMMV.

BiteyShark · 23/02/2018 06:58

The recommended amount is just a guide so your dog may need more or less depending on the amount of exercise and treats they get. Typically better quality foods (with less fillers) require less amounts. You can always bulk up with veg if your dog looks hungry. I use wet which is a larger volume than dry but with the same amount of calories so he tends to feel fuller.

allaboutdogfood.co.uk will give you a good start on what brands are available etc.

None. Feed raw Smile

Arden Grange suits my family's dogs

My dog is 40kg and eats around 200 - 250g of Millies split into 2 meals, plus a couple of carrots a day.
He has one big walk a day and a shorter evening one.
He’s fine on that, any more food and he gets overweight.

joystir59 · 25/02/2018 16:11

None. Feed cooked and or raw meat with veggies

Bigfoot1 · 25/02/2018 16:41

Gotta love mumsnet! The OP asked specifically about dry food and all the raw feeders can’t help but pile in! Grin

Cowsopinion · 25/02/2018 21:40

We use AVA from pets at home, scores 4.2 out of 5 on allaboutdogfood.co.uk, which given its price point I felt was quite good.

We tried all the more expensive ones and they didn't agree with her. We were told by the vet that sometimes it's too rich for them.

Definitley check out the above site, it's really helpful.

MRSJWRTWR · 26/02/2018 12:12

Hi, my small dog was on 100g of Akela a day but was starting to leave it. So I reduced it down to 80g and added a 150g tin of Lilys Kitchen mixed in, divided between two meals. No problems finishing it now.

DeepfriedPizza · 26/02/2018 13:43

Expensive food doesn't agree with pup. We feed Step up to naturals from pets at home which is 22% protein

LadyinCement · 26/02/2018 13:45

I feed my bouncy healthy dog Harringtons. Like Cowsopinion I tried all the "posh" ones but they upset dog's stomach terribly. There was one of the very premium ones that he smelled and just retched.

Agree, Bigfoot1 about the raw feeder mafia. I remember one posting when I first got dog and had asked for advice saying that raw feeding was easy: you just kept the meat in your "outhouse". Outhouse indeed!

Oops4 · 01/03/2018 01:12

Agree depends on your dog. I tried various "superior" dog foods and took advice from the website mentioned above but my little guy just didn't tolerate them. After a spell on prescription food which is basically crap according to what you'd think you should feed your dog, I decided to try some of the cheaper foods and he is much better on them. Current one is iams and he is doing great on it. Doesn't score highly and is only around 22% protein but the other just seemed to be too rich

Resident Collie generally switches between a couple of foods depending on whether or not she needs to gain weight. If she's been ill and lost weight (and it drops off her when she's ill), I put her on Lukullus for a month as she really struggles to gain weight. Once she's back in her healthy weight range, she's back on Eden to maintain her weight.
With Lukullus she normally gets a couple of cups a day. The Eden is 1-1/2 cups depending on how active she is at the time.

Greyhorses · 02/03/2018 19:48

All of mine have looked fabulous on skinners duck and rice.

Amber0685 · 02/03/2018 19:52

Iames, vet recommended

TheVanguardSix · 02/03/2018 20:59

Our lab vizsla cross has been happy with Royal Canin from day 1. He's two now and eats the digestion one. It really agrees with him. He laps it up. He has nice poos! Poos to envy really. Poos I strive to have myself. Grin

deste · 02/03/2018 22:53

I feed our dog Eden 80/20 and like you I thought it wasn’t a lot so I give him cooked carrots and a small spoonful of sardines twice a day and he is fine.

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 03/03/2018 19:46

GrinVanguard laughing at your poo envy,!

FuckyDucky · 03/03/2018 19:49

Iams is one to avoid I’d say, sorry amber
Bulked out with cheap maize and wheat.

Whatdoiladymcbeth · 03/03/2018 19:51

I use Millie’s Woolfheart- it’s brilliant. I would have used origin if this didn’t suit but I can buy Millie’s in bulk. I have 2 x 45kg dogs and a 10.5 kg dog. One of them is on Royal Canin giant, which I don’t recommend as its expensive crap but it’s all she will eat. The other one is on raw food and Millie’s and is perfect on it, feeding raw food along with dry use to be frowned upon but it’s absolutely fine to do, it’s very out of date to say otherwise.

If you fancy raw but don’t want to do all the work I highly rate wolf tucker, it just worked out too expensive for me with big dogs.

Sallyswot1 · 03/03/2018 19:58

Our lab is on Royal Canin. She has the neutered one and tolerates it well. Despite being a dustbin lab, she has a delicate constitution!

FuckyDucky · 03/03/2018 20:02

sally Have you ever read the ingredients? Where is the actual meat??
Some of these foods are a big marketing con.

Corn, poultry protein (dried), wheat, corn gluten, lignocellulose, animal proteins (hydrolysed), animal fats, vegetable protein isolate*, beet pulp, yeast, fish oil, minerals, soya oil, psyllium (seeds and husks), borrage oil, hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin).
