Dog collars - What happened to the buckle collars are clip ones sturdy?

Just that really, they all seem to be the quick release. But if a dog pulls, surely the safety clip would unclip?

My dog is strong and used to pull a lot
The clip ones were no use at all and she could easily ‘escape’

You can still get buckle clasps - if you are buying online (as I do), you just need to look at the picture carefully to make sure which fastening your selected collar has. I don't like the clasp ones - they haven't come undone yet but everytime JoyfulDog shakes herself, a terrible loud clacking noise erupts.

I always use harnesses for this reason.
My last dog lunged one day and his collar snapped open and he ran in the road.

I've had a dog run over the road before when the clip came undone, thankfully he was Ok, I was so upset at the thought of what could have happened Confused

DDog is little (6kg) but full of muscle and has a great tendency to lunge at motorbikes, and used to pull like a steam train before training was sorted out. His buckle clip lead has never snapped off, but does have a tendency to loosen itself so has to be tightened regularly. No idea where the collar came from as it came with the dog.

I had problems with the starter collar I bought. I found a traditional leather collar with a strong buckle at the local market pet stall and have been using that. I actually must get him the larger size as we're on the last hole.

I have a leather lead too.

Thank you everyone!

I use a traditional buckle collar for this reason too.
Even though my dog is weedy and doesn't ever pull, I worry if I have to yank at the lead in an emergency that a clip buckle might fail.

I use a buckle collar on my dog, I recently bought him a new one from Pets At Home.

MsHomeSlice · 23/02/2018 16:01

we have a clip one, but it seems to have a lock on it too...a little red push that stops the clips from being pushed in

I am not keen, but it is standard issue for guide dogs.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 23/02/2018 20:20

You can get clip ones that have a lead attachment ring both sides of clip and you attach the lead to both rings, so the clip can't break (it's not under stress) and if it did somehow break the lead clip holds the collar together anyway.
I can't explain it very well.

I just use bog standard clip collars on mine but one has lead attached to a harness, rather than the collar and the other doesn't pull at all.

This is what I was trying to explain. (Just first Google link I found, it was a different brand I'd seen)
