I'm looking for tips or advice or just ideas from anyone with any experience please.
My collie is around 11, not sure the precise age as I rescued her at 1 and a half but they weren't sure of her age then. She's always looked old.
Anyway I also have a 1 year old baby and a 3 year old child.
My dog seems to have become incontinent at night. I am going to take her to the vet of course to rule our illness but she's ok in herself so I'm suspecting it's purely down to age. It's only at night. We get up and let her out regularly and she does her business but somehow she's managing to do more.
Anyway, if it's just an age thing how can it be managed, especially with two little ones running around? My partner is st the end of his tether and although I'm not, I do see where he's coming from with having the kids around the mess no matter how well we clean up. There's no room for a crate at night or anything

I don't have any first hand experience but hopefully someone who does will be along soon. However, I think there are medications that can help here so vet visit first.

We were often up at all hours of the night to let our elderly male dog out for the loo. He would bark and one of us had to get up to let him out. Not ideal when you have a young family I know, if it wasn’t the kids waking us, it was the dog.

Options you could consider are, firstly visit vet incase of uti. Could you have a dog flap fitted so the dog could go out independently. If you have vinyl flooring in the kitchen could the dog sleep in there, easier to clean up.

Sadly we lost our dog when he was 13, we still miss him.

Thanks for replies. Unfortunately this is a rented house so can't make a dog flap.
I will definitely take her to the vets. We do have a moppable floor so that helps.
I love her to pieces but it's kind of unspoken that my partner tolerates her so I am aware that this is peeing him right off.

Definitely check for UTI first of all. Older collies can get a bit of joint pain (don't we all) that might wake her up in the night. It used to happen with my old collie & he would pitter patter around, then flump down, waking us all up. We cured it by buying him a memory foam bed and he slept through the night in comfort. If your dog is more comfortable, she may sleep through.

Unfortunately that's what happens to dogs as they get older, and you just have to accept it (unless there is a medical cause)

Laying newspaper/puppy pads down in one area so that she learns to pee in that area may help with the cleaning.

I think you just need to remember the 10 good years she has given you and support her in her final years- she isn't doing it on purpose.

Aww, poor dog. There are lots of meds, I believe, that can help with incontinence. No personal experience but I'm sure your vet can help. Good luck.

missbattenburg · 15/02/2018 14:08

Defo see a vet and rule out a UTI as a first call.

Older, spayed bitches can develop hormonal incontinence and a hormone (added to food) can be very effective at stopping it - we have a dog like that.

I was also talking to someone I knew who used Dorwest herbs 'Mixed Vegetable" tablets to great effect on an older dog who used to have occasional accidents. Never used it myself, but might be worth a shot if all else fails.

Hownow39 · 15/02/2018 14:09

Use puppy pads At nights. It's probably because of age my dog was like this before he died. He couldn't help it.

Hownow39 · 15/02/2018 14:10

Put the pads by back door. Cleaner than newspaper and won't damage the floor underneath.

FuckyNellYaBastad · 15/02/2018 14:11

My dog started doing this and it turned out to be a massive bladder stone

Jaxtellerswife · 15/02/2018 18:11

Thanks all. The soonest the vet can see her is Sunday, so I've booked her in. She's happy in herself so we shall see

Hello OP
Your dog will be very distressed also about this,a dog(trained)knows toileting is done away from the home and he will only be doing it because he cannot control it.
Please don't tell him off..
See what the vet says, but you can withdraw water from 1800hrs and take him out for wee breaks in the evening and last thing at night first thing in the morning.
Is he drinking more water?
I hope you get to the bottom of this Flowers

usainbolt · 15/02/2018 20:08

Please don't ever withhold water for a dog.

Bitches can often have urine leakage etc as they get older and as said above medication can sort it out totally. I am glad that you have a vet appointment.

Does she wee in her bed or get up to go to a place to wee?
