Family dog what breed?

Blarblarblar · 14/02/2018 10:17

I would like to get a family pet after the summer. I want a puppy. Looking for advice on the best breeds for family life. I loved having pets as a child and would like to give my children the opertunity to experience this as well.
I appreciate that a rescue dog is the kindest most ethical choice (and have had them in the past) however there are requirements that I want and you just don’t know what you are getting. Previously have had two rescues one amazing lovely beast and the other to much for me to cope with and really aggressive due to his abusive background.
My husband is not a big dog fan but agrees good for kids so.
I will from now on own my Own business and the dog can be with me all the time plenty exercise company etc
We want one that doesn’t shed too much and doesn’t have lots of drool (DH requirements)
Good with kids and not Yappy.
I want plenty of time to look into reputable breeders so......
Advice welcome

Thank you everyone for all the advice I’ve looked up and read the wee bios on all the dogs suggested. I’m currently swaying toward toward the whippet. I can’t have yappy at all because the new business is a guest house. Are they just a mini greyhound because I know I love them and their lazy dopey ways.
Mini schnauzers are gorgeous but worried about yapping.

I think that whippets are effectively mini greyhounds, although I should add that I've never owned a greyhound and the only ones I've come into contact with are ex racers. Whippets used to be called the poor man's greyhound, as they were bred for racing in the alleys between terraced houses, whereas greyhounds were owned by the wealthy.

I should point out (in the interests of full disclosure) that they can be quite crazy - Stanley was very chewy as puppy, and had (still has) moments of complete barminess, when he just runs round the house like a loon. But it doesn't last long and then he's crashed on the sofa again. Whippets don't do floors - they're too bony for that and they need to be kept warm at night (embarrassed to admit that ours sleeps in (not on!) our bed Blush, but he makes a very effective hot water bottle Grin).

He has a very strong prey drive - the only time his recall goes to pot is when he's stalking a squirrel!

Ours is unusual in that he does bark at passersby, but I understand that is unusual in a whippet (and I'm sure could be trained out of him). You can't leave anything out within his reach in the kitchen either.

But he is so loving and beautiful - currently curled up beside me on the sofa, cuddling his teddy, which he got out of his toybox himself. He'll put his head on my lap in a minute, which makes it challenging to type Grin.

Here's a piccy I pinched from Google. The largest is a Greyhound, in the middle is the Whippet and the smallest is the Italian Greyhound (mega fragile those ones!)

I adore whippets. Never owned one yet though.
We have mini schnauzers - one is very quiet but the other is noisy. I do have friends with a guesthouse who own one however.

We had a lurcher when i was growing up and there was more of his hair on the floor every day than there was on the dog!

I recommend you look at poodles. 3 different sizes, very trainable and don't shed. They look really cute with a normal hair cut too. If you go for a fashionable poodle cross, they might well have a coat that sheds from their other parent.

MyBoysAndI · 14/02/2018 17:00

What is a puggle like? My stbxh and OW are getting a furbaby soon and I'm a little bothered as l don't know if young kids are suitable for it

whitewineandchocolate · 14/02/2018 17:02

A mini schnauzer I knew was one of the most yappy dogs I’ve ever known.

Working cocker here, quite bonkers on walks, doesn’t shed but needs grooming regularly due to long hair. Doesn’t really bark, def no drool. Very quiet in the house. Great with children, prefers people to other dogs.

tkband3 · 14/02/2018 17:03

Our whippet doesn't moult - he does shed a little, but it's hardly noticeable...only on white sheets! It does help that he matches most of our decor and furniture (grey!).

Whippet people, can I ask how walkable they are? Like would they be up for hours of hill hiking or not really?

Blarblarblar · 14/02/2018 17:31

Apologies tk is was your handsome chap that set me off already

LittlePearl · 14/02/2018 17:50

Border Terrier - least 'terrier-ish' of the terrier breeds, fantastic first dog / family pet. Our vet recommends them to anyone asking your question.

merz the thing is t working Angry

Merrz - our whippet would walk with us as long as we wanted him to. He loves a good run with his mates at the park, but is equally happy just walking/trotting along with us.

Blarblarblar here's another pic, just because he's gorgeous Grin. It was a while ago, so he still looks a bit puppy-ish (DH is a photographer, so set up a whole portrait shoot for him!)

Have a look at this Facebook group for loads of pics of gorgeous whippets!

dotdotdotmustdash · 14/02/2018 19:36

Plenty of young puppies end up in rescue. Clean slates to develop into the dogs you want and a life saved. You might have to wait a bit, but it will be worth it.

I have two rescue dogs, one came at 18 months, the other at 12 months. You couldn't meet nicer dogs.

Blarblarblar · 14/02/2018 20:01

Wow tk that’s a very suave gentleman. Thanks

Alas I’m not on Facebook but think I’m quite set.
I will have a look for rescue whipet puppies but also check out some reputable breeders.
Great advice from so many lovely folks thank you.

TO the pp asking about puggles, I know a few pugs and have a beagle myself. The pugs all seem very well behaved and trainable and our beagle is the most soft tempered dog ever, but naughty. I don’t know how it works when the breeds are crossed but I would have both those breeds around children no problem x

M0nstermunch · 14/02/2018 20:11

Definitely a whippet 😀 absolutely adore ours, she is the easiest dog I have ever known. No barking, doesn't shed or smell, will walk as far or little as you want to, no trouble in the house just takes herself to bed or goes on the sofa. She doesn't really show much interest when you're eating, kids can sit and eat on the sofa she will just curl up at the end, no drooling or begging for food. But she is also a very loving dog and great fun Couldn't get better!

sijjy · 14/02/2018 20:20

Cavalier King Charles. We are picking our puppy up on Saturday. They are supposed to be absolutely brilliant with children. The only thing is the puppies tend to shed quite a bit but it's supposed to calm down.
If you do decide on a cavalier King Charles pls make sure you go to a assured Breeder as they're are a lot out there that are a lot cheaper but haven't been health checked or anything. We made this mistake about a month ago and when we took the puppy to the vet she told us he had a heart problem. We were all heartbroken.

Blarblarblar · 14/02/2018 22:28

I’ve just emailed a kennel club registered and inspected breeder. That’s the right combi, yes.

Our whippet pup arrives on Sat. (Eeekkk) We went with a KC registered and inspected breeder in the N/E and have had a very positive experience. Feel free to PM me for details.
