Puppy and irritated feet?

Dear all

I’m wondering if anyone has had this before. I have a new pup who arrived yesterday. He’s wonderful and so far has been an absolute dream (no accidents, learned 3 commands in 24 hours.....we’ve been seriously lucky) He’s obviously feeling irritation/pain on the pads of his feet in the afternoon and strangely not earlier. My theory is that it’s either something on the floor of the garden, which is big and he loves so we’re running around it a few times a day. It could also be the remnants of Flash on the wooden floors. I’ll stop using anything but water in the house but wondered if anyone has experienced this before and discovered the reason? The breeder didn’t have this but she had a small garden with only grass and far more carpet at home.

Anyone? He seems to be really irritated in the afternoons and the only explanation I think is that we go further in the garden by then, during the day. Our garden is big so trying to identify a culprit will be difficult to say the least.

Have you had a good look at his pads and in between? DM’s dog is prone to thorns. MIL’s previous dog used to get grass seeds wedged in there. She’d soak the errant paw in hot salty water.

Oh, and the obligatory photo Grin

Apologies for the slight blur....he won’t stay still!

Thanks OhWot, we’ve looked and can’t see anything. On the first afternoon it was only one paw but yesterday, it was all of them. Hopefully it won’t happen today, but I’ve ordered dog booties just in case!

In what way is the puppy showing pain and irritation? Licking feet? Not wanting to walk? Limping?

shushpenfold · 11/02/2018 07:28

Hi Bitey, he’s licking and biting them and whines. He lies down and then starts shaking his feet and then licks/bites. It’s obvious.
In the mornings though, nothing at all.

Do you think it might be a stress thing? I had read they sometimes chew their feet if stressed.

I would just wash the paws with a damp cloth to rule that out. Are you due for a vet check up soon?

TropicPlunder · 11/02/2018 13:54

Maybe unlikely for a little pup but my outside dog gets ticks right up inbetween her toes. They start tiny and hide in the fur deep in the 'webbed' bit of underneath the foot. Hope you get to the bottom of whatever it is!

babyblackbird · 11/02/2018 14:25

Could he have into contact with nettles ? My dog has done this before when running through fields where tiny nettle plants were just coming through.

shushpenfold · 11/02/2018 14:36

Thanks all. Bitey it could be as he only arrived on Friday eve, although he definitely seemed to be uncomfortable. Nothing yet today so we shall see. Baby, he could have as there are more nettles at the bottom of the garden (although none obvious yet) He didn’t appear to have anything obvious there.....ticks, erticaria etc, but will keep on it. He had a foot bath last night and it may have helped a little, but a warm damp cloth would be better. Xxx

Oh, yes, vet is on Thursday for jabs.

Has he had his injections? It sounds like it could be a grass allergy type thing. You could try keeping him off the grass for a day or two - see if he still does it. If he can't go on walks yet, perhaps try wiping his feet when you come in (we use sensitive skin baby wipes to wipe the paws of our allergic dog if she has been on grass).

shushpenfold · 12/02/2018 14:01

Hi all, thanks again. The irritation stopped last night....no change to anything and I have no idea why it started or stopped!

If it’s the first time he has discovered mud and grass it could simply be that it was off for him and felt weird on his pads. So he has been trying to clean them off.

my Staffie hated getting wet and muddy feet and would vigorously wipe his paws when he came in from the garden!

shushpenfold · 12/02/2018 14:36

Thanks x

Mine gets sore feet if she eats chicken!
Wet and muddy feet are also an issue. If you rinse feet use cool water and dry.

honeyroar · 12/02/2018 15:06

Id mention to the vet on thurs.

TattyCat · 12/02/2018 18:34

If he's been walking on pavements or roads at any time over the last few days/week, it could be the grit used on the roads. It's very harsh on dogs feet, and if it's anything like our road, they grit about 3 times a day, so I need to be careful (car rides only at the moment!). This is a likely cause.

shushpenfold · 12/02/2018 19:44

Thanks again all.

No pavements yet as he hasn’t had second jabs (although trainer advised using pavements today....socialisation/positive new experiences) No reactions again today do I wonder if it was a ‘new floor, new garden’ thing. He seems very happy though, which is lovelySmile
