Dog pooing inside at night. Ever night apparently

Hi,

So I've already posted about this, but we thought we had it. We don't have it Confused

She never has accidents in the day. Never. It's only at night and I know she can hold it, because she always could before and was never desperate to go out in the morning or anything. I think she's just decided that it's ok.

She was ill and on antibiotics, so that would explain the initial set back. She got better and stopped doing it, then started, then stopped and has just started again! Sad

We thought we'd cracked it. Fed her a bit later, made sure she'd done a poo after that and if she hadn't in the garden, we'd take her for a walk. I scrubbed and scrubbed the carpet and febreezed it to get rid of as much scent of hers as possible.

We had 3 mornings in a row where we came down to nothing and then the last two, enormous poos everywhere!

Any tips? Desperate for advice. I don't want this to be a permanent thing... obviously. She's being spayed next week, so no doubt that will throw her too. Fun times! Hmm

TIA

Bakers is dreadful , gets less than 1* on the dog food review site as does Tesco kibble and I doubt Tesco wet food does much better . It’s full of fillers and crap that dogs don’t need and don’t digest properly .

Fab41 · 09/02/2018 16:11

We had the same issue with our year old irish terrier. Turned out he needed a different food, he was already on grain free but it was too complex. He now has James wellbeloved grain free, fish and veg variety. Only goes twice a day now, its a revelation.

Welsh, so when do they go for their last poo? I'm worried she'd be hungry on one early meal....

They get a walk in the evening, poop for Britain, then out for a wee before we go to bed. Walk in the morning, for poos, then breakfast.

minsmum · 09/02/2018 16:17

My rescue was impeccably clean indoors then we had firewor k s night. We have scrubbed the carpets with urine off, did the getting up at stupid o'clock moving it back 5 minutes at a tine, feeding earlier. thou g ht we had cracked it. It all started again this week. I shall be watching with interest too

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 09/02/2018 16:21

Flora, oh. Not good then. Thanks for that.

Fab, where do you get this magical stuff?

Welsh, is this early evening? What kind of time in the morning do they get fed?

I second the comment that Bakers is an appalling food.

The time of the walk varies, in the summer very early, in the winter later.

Miranda15110 · 09/02/2018 16:26

Might be an idea to crate overnight then let her out first thing. This is a great way to House train younger dogs. Most dogs feel secure in their crate and as long as it's only used for short periods and overnight it is a proven method of establishing good house training.

That is one idea, I am concerned the dogs gut is still upset after the antibiotics though, you may come down to an unholy mess. You may need earplugs and to live in a detached house as well.

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 09/02/2018 16:42

She was on the antibiotics almost a month a go now. Her stomach seemed to go back to normal quite quickly and then seems to be on and off between one day to the next now. Assuming they'd be out of her system by now! Confused

Dapplegrey · 09/02/2018 16:48

She's not an Italian Greyhound is she? We've got a three year old Iggy, and she's the sweetest, most characterful, adorable dog but we cannot House train her and apparently this is a common problem with the breed.

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 09/02/2018 17:19

No, she's a lab x cocker. I love Greyhounds! Didn't realise this was an issue with those breeds.

My dog had an on off (mostly off) stomach until we swopped his food and found what suits him. He is now also pretty regular on when he needs to poo and thankgod they are now firm (so nice to pick up poo with a poo bag rather than having to hose it away with water).

saffinmum · 09/02/2018 17:29

Hi.. I second the crate suggestion! Worked brilliantly for our dog, she loves her 'cave'.. and it helped enormously with potty training! I'd also recommend Pooch and Mutt Health and digestion kibble.. We tried everything to get normal 'poops'.. this food really helped settle her stomach down.

Doctordonowt · 09/02/2018 18:38

We have a terrier who suddenly did this. We switched to Lilly’s Recovery wet food and she has been fine since. We also soak the kibble before giving it to her.

thirtyplusone · 09/02/2018 18:44

Hi OP. What are you feeding her at the moment? Are you following the weight guidelines? How many times a day are you feeding? Are you at home with her in the day? What times do you take her out for walks? Have you worked out her signals for when she needs to go yet?

Questions questions!

Greyhorses · 09/02/2018 19:28

No real advice but I also have one who does this, she’s 10 months ish and still poos every time she’s left alone pretty much.

I know it’s seperation anxiety but I have no idea how to fix it so just offering support instead Blush

Gibble1 · 09/02/2018 19:42

Our 3 year old working cocker does this. Not every night but very often. It wouldn’t be so bad but we have a flap so both dogs can come and go as they please. I just think he gets scared or it’s too cold or wet or any number of other reasons.
When I come down in the morning, when I open the door, if there is nothing there, I make a big fuss of him and say what a good boy he is for no poos. If there is a poo, I pick it up and dispose of it without saying anything to him. He then doesn’t get a fuss until later.

WasWildatHeart · 09/02/2018 20:28

I bought an 8m old red setter, supposedly house trained. Not. Got fed up clearing up poops night after night so put him in a small space at night. Instantly clean - so my theory is that dogs don't mess their own space. We soon moved Ddog back into the kitchen and he never messed again. Worth a try?

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 09/02/2018 20:30

Our girl was trained and never poohed overnight. Suddenly started with only pooing sporadically and every few days had accidents overnight,. We thought it might be behavioural but the vile smell and consistency meant we took her to the vet, stool sample came back as campylobacter which I think adult dogs can fight off but maybe not completely. Maybe worth checking a stool sample?

VioletCharlotte · 09/02/2018 20:35

Could he have worms? Maybe try working him and see if it makes a difference?

Wolfiefan · 09/02/2018 20:37

Bakers is awful.
What is your routine like?

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 09/02/2018 20:50

Agree Bakers is just utter rubbish - also linked to hyper activity and behavioural issues in a lot of dogs as their systems just can't deal with it and they are obviously not getting the nutrition they need.

Do have a look on www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk to see how different foods are rated for their quality. It's an eye opener!

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 10/02/2018 08:14

So it happened again. We were out last night and she had a late dinner (about 9.30) of rice and chicken. She had a poo just before that, so we thought she'd be ok. Nope. I went down about 6.45 ish (killer, when you're not sleeping) and she'd done it again. Not loads and it looked normal. I didn't acknowledge it (or her) which I normally do. I don't yell, but I'll point and say "no" a few times. I just cleaned it up (again!!). She wouldn't have been desperate. She obviously just doesn't think she needs to wait.

Bakers is going in the bin. I think we're going to try rice and chicken again this morning, a big meal, around 10 and leave it at that.

I have to say, I'll feel guilty not feeding her at night.

OP posts:
fourpawswhite · 10/02/2018 08:29

Agree with others re worming etc.

My friends cocker did this. It was a combination of worms and to much food.

I have terriers and one in particular has a tiny tummy. She gets breakfast at 6am after a poo. Then she gets dinner at 6pm after a poo.

Go to vet with dog and get weighed ASAP. Remember the food drops as they get older. I was reading the puppy amounts on something the other day and it's way more than a dog over 12 months. I would be reluctant to feed one big meal of chicken and rice until you are certain of the correct amount needed.
