We are moving to the US in a few months and need to arrange transport for DDog. Has anyone any experience of this or could recommend a company that could assist? Our first quote was $6k which seems a lot and they didn't have great reviews.

Is it worth the stress and discomfort for your dog? Crated for hours, no opportunity to go to the toilet, not allowed toys or any distractions because it's a choking hazard.

Are there no friends or family who would take him for you?

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 03/02/2018 12:06

Yes I do think it is worth having the upheaval so that she can spend the 2nd half of her life in the same place as her family.

I'd never give up my dog. For anything. No answers OP but I love you love your dog so much 🐶

6K sounds about right if it includes sorting out all health and export documentation, correct size crate and transport.

TropicPlunder · 03/02/2018 14:09

Each case different of course, but in many cases the stress of the journey would be preferable to the stress of being rehomed. Agree with the OP, you don't leave family members behind!! I'm about to transport my dog in August...although it's from east Africa to uk. I'm trying to get quotes for agencies, but also looking in to whether I can go it alone. So, if she can travel on the same flight as me as'luggage' rather than cargo, (some airlines allow) sorting the paper work and vet certification myself. It's a choice between spending money and saving time or vice versa! Each airline and countries have different policies so may be a lot of work without agency. Good luck! And report back

It's very straightforward taking dog to the US from U.K.

You essentially only need a fitness to fly certificate from a vet 24-48h prior to the flight

States do vary in requirements so it's always recommended to make sure they're up to date with boosters and rabies shots. Plus get a passport for re entry to Uk and the EU

You don't necessarily need to use a transport company- if you're happy to get dog to airport with suitable crate then all you need I stay certificate.

Or enlist airpets/pet air help

Muse84 · 03/02/2018 16:55

Ps 6k is FAR too much! Airline tickets should be the most expensive part! Sine countries are very tricky and require a lot of legwork and paperwork (ek Japan or Australia). Trust me, the USA is not one of them (if entering from UK)

Sorry for typos!

My parents took their dog abroad with them using Pet Air Uk to the Caribbean. This was about 5 years ago, but I think the cost was about £1500 -£2000. They had to have a crate made specially for the size and dog had to be kept at airport in UK overnight to be monitored health wise etc before travel. All of this was included in that price and they felt she was really well cared for. Worth noting though that this company only do one way, so you'd need a different solution if you were to return.

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 03/02/2018 19:57

Thanks all. Have got another quote from petair for less than £2k and waiting for airpets to get back to me. I just want to make sure she has the least stressful experience possible so really appreciate your input.

A former work colleague who was moving to the east coast of USA, travelled with their dog on the Queen Mary, Southampton to New York. Then hired a car and drove to their new home. I think the sail cost them about £1400 for the dog.

VimFuego101 · 04/02/2018 14:12

We used PetAir to ship our cat and were very happy with them. Be aware that if you're flying to a hot part of the US, they have certain months where they won't allow pet cargo due to the heat and risks of the animal sitting on the tarmac.
