I'm planning for in a few years so still very much at the thinking stage (I may have even posted this before I can't remember).
I currently have a working cocker spaniel who is very well trained but a bit of a nutter, we attend training and do loads of training, plenty of walks, very happy to chill and play nicely most of the time at home.
I also have a border terrier who borders on the lazy and with the walks we do she will zonk out the rest of the time.
I want to get a bigger dog but everytime I look at the dogs I like they say very high energy breeds (which I do know and I probably won;t ever get one). I like dalmations, gsp's, vizlas, weirmeraners, that type of dog. I want a gun dog that I can do loads of training with as we really enjoy that as a family and will walk for miles. But I'm scared that what we do wouldn;t be enough for these type of dogs.

We tend to go for 2 hour walks and training inbetween when I'm off and I work 3 days a week (although often weekends so only 1 day for the dogs if that makes sense). On these days the dogs tend to get 2 half hour walks, one in the morning, one by the kids when they get in from school and maybe a little walk when dh gets in from work.

My mum will pop in and take them out for half an hour in the middle of the day as well most of the time but not always.
So the question, I know these dogs are high energy but how to they compare to a working cocker? Are they much more high energy? would our set up work? And if not what dogs are bigger but not so high energy without going into the couch potato scale of things?

If you like big dogs, how about a lurcher? Much less exercise needed both physical and mental than the dogs you mention, but depending on the cross could enjoy the training

If you already own a working cocker you have one of the highest energy dogs so you will cope with a gundog with ease.

Go for it - your life style sounds great for a large dog. (you might even find them a bit lazy in comparison to your wc)

2 hours off lead and training daily is enough for most dogs tbh

working cocker is a nutter, we always get asked if he is a pup, he's nearly eight Shock

Also definatly not opposed to a lurcher, I love pointys but worry they wouldn't keep up with spaniel.

I have collies, working labs and a working cocker. He has more energy than the others put together Grin You will find any other breed easy boring

I love collies, my aunty has 3 collies and does obedience trials with them. They are gorgeous. Eric might be a nutter but he is also so easy to train and the happiest dog in the world.

I've got two Weimaraners (both bitches, one's 7 and the other is 18 months) and with the level of exercise you're already doing with your cocker, I don't think you'd need to worry. I take mine out with a dog-walking group about four times a week for two hours at a time, and do an hour or so the other days, and that suits them well. The younger one likes playing games and finding things - keeping them mentally occupied is just as important as the physical side, I think.

This is how they are after two hours playing with the others...lovely!
