Campylobacter....feeding advice

Dogs stool sample has come back with campylobacter diagnosed and she starts antibiotics today. She is 20 months old, eating well and hasn’t lost weight, not dehydrated. For past week until diagnosis has been on vet prescription diet which has firmed her up and soothed her stomach.
Vet has said she can go back onto her normal food which is Naturediet and a cold pressed kibble with 70% fish. My question to anybody who has experienced this infection with their dog is ...will this leave her with a sensitive tum ? Should I keep to a blander diet? And what about treats , chews etc when she is better. She loves a died tripe stick or goats ear. I would be grateful for advice.

My dog hasn't had that infection but I have had it as an adult (ate something infected on holiday Sad)

Glad she is feeling better.

Our younger dog came to us from a rescue as a 10 week old, seriously emaciated, pup due to Campylobacter.

He was on just steamed chicken and white fish plus Prokolin probiotic paste for the next 10 weeks and had to be kept in isolation - which absolutely screwed his socialisation period and left him scared of other dogs, but he made a complete recovery stomach-wise. He is four and a half now and has never had a bad stomach since.

We transferred him from the steamed white meat and fish diet onto Canagan, which he took to straight away with no problems.

Thanks bitey, she isn’t much of a scavenger but will drink out of any old muddy puddle. I am taking fresh water out at the moment on walks and she is getting the idea I think.
Thanks, moosemama, will I be able to get the pro biotic paste from my vet or online,? think that will help to get her gut flora going again.

You can get pro kolin online at places like amazon or from your vet. I tend to get mine online because even with a vet plan discount it is cheaper.

moosemama · 30/01/2018 10:48

We had prokolin from the vet initially, but then went onto Canikur.

You can buy both online.

Well, threw up the antibiotic(Baytril) within an hour of having it. Going to try tomorrow to confirm if it is the tablet. Keen to eat her supper but she is very clingy tonight which is unusual.

Oh no vomiting her antibiotic is the last thing you want Sad

moosemama · 31/01/2018 08:10

Oh no! I would try and get hold of some Canikur or Prokolin asap, even if you have to buy the first one from the vets, to help settle her stomach.

If she can’t stomach the antibiotics, I wonder if they can do it by injection until her stomach improves a bit?

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 31/01/2018 08:37

She’s had next antibiotic this morning with her breakfast and is holding it down so far. I did get the Prokolin yesterday but was nervous of giving her anything else after she vomited, is it best to squirt it on top of food or in to her Kong Trax to lick out?

Mine doesn't like the taste so I have to actually mix it into his wet food for him to eat it.

moosemama · 31/01/2018 14:22

Mine would lick it straight from the syringe if I let them. I don’t think it matters as long as you get it into them.

Good to hear she’s keeping the antibiotics down today. Fingers crossed it’s onwards and upwards from here.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 31/01/2018 21:05

She licked a tiny bit of prokolin from my finger so gave her the dose in her Kong trax after she succumbed to her nightly brushing and detangling damp legs and under carriage. Poo firm again today so am hoping to start weaning her back onto her Gentle kibble from tomorrow. Is this too soon, I don’t want her on the prescription diet longer than necessary.

We were told to keep my boy on the steamed chicken and fish diet until his stool samples came back clear, but he was absolutely emaciated, so I think he was probably a bit of an extreme case.

If it was me, I would probably wait until she’d finished the antibiotics before weaning her back over, just to be on the safe side.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 01/02/2018 06:29

Vet has said they don’t usually send off a stool sample after the antibiotics but I wonder whether there is a way I could access a service myself just to have peace of mind.
Will keep her on GI diet for a bit longer. Thanks.

I know we didn't have the same issue as Cocodog but I found that BiteyDog would eat the vet food but he didn't really bounce back after his stomach issues until we got him back on his own food (feeding little and often so it didn't upset it).

Our vet used to say most dogs like the taste of pro kolin and it seems he was right. BiteyDog would sniff it on my finger and turn away in disgust Grin

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 01/02/2018 17:56

DH and I both struggling to get the paste out of the syringe, either we have a dud one or we are indeed very stupid.
Cocodog I think would eat most anything. I have noticed she has gone back to hoovering up the food at speed because the kibble is small, she takes a bit longer to eat her Gentle kibble normally. She also is drinking more than usual which I think is a result of eating extruded kibble rather than cold pressed. Maybe?

The tubes of pro kolin that I have used have a wheel that you rotate to the amount you want to administer so for 3g you wind down the wheel three notches and then push until it stops.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 01/02/2018 20:01

We have done that and pushed but nothing comes out. We wheel it back several more notches and out it comes. I’m afraid I guess at around half a teaspoonful.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 01/02/2018 20:09

I do have to hold the tube and twist the wheel in a way that you see the gradient markings underneath otherwise the wheel just twists and spins but doesn't move down. For BiteyDogs weight it isn't actually much that he has.
