Rehoming a dog - impossible?

sparklebot90 · 29/01/2018 11:04

Im writing this after spending the past 4-5 months visiting rehoming centres and yesterday again being told we are unsuitable to rehome a dog. Its so frustrating as me and my partner were inspired by the supervets rehoming programme that was on last summer on channel 4 and were completely convinced that it was the best way for us to have a dog. We moved into our own first house last year after being in rented accommodation and so unable to have any pets. My partner works full time and quite long days but is able to take his hour long lunch whenever he likes so could come home. I work part time 3 days a week as a teaching assistant and leave around 8am and am home by 3.30pm. I also live fairly close to where I work and would be able to be home between 12pm and 1pm for my lunch hour. This however seems to be too much of a stretch for any rehoming centre. Also we are deemed as not having owned dogs before which is annoying as we have both always had family dogs both as children and as adults...granted we haven't been fully responsible before but I think we have a good understanding of what it takes to be a dog owner. We are more than financially able to look after a dog. Anyway..im wondering if anyone else has successfully rehomed a dog whilst working? If not then we could look at getting a puppy but it seems such a shame when there are hundreds of dogs sat in kennels :(. Also always feel very unsure about funding puppy breeding. Any tips or ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I work from home and was told I wasn't suitable to adopt! we adopted a rescue from Spain in the end - easier to rescue from abroad than a charity in the UK

Blimey MoogBoov. I've been pondering going for a job that would involve me WFH so that I would be more suitable to adopt / keep dog walker fees down.

Was that a big name rescue, or did you try a variety of UK based ones?

MoogBoov · 04/02/2018 22:33

I tried a few UK ones before seeing an ad on a rehoming Facebook group. my partners aunt also rescued a dog from Romania. she works 4 hours in the morning at a vets, took her old dog into work with her each day, and was also denied from UK rescues!

I've sent you a PM, but my gorgeous girl came from Cyprus. I can't rate the rescue centre highly enough. I was matched with the perfect dog

Try Fall in love with a Rescue, a small charity in Berkshire who rehome greyhounds and whippets. Our working hours are similar to yours and they were not worried by that, they were more concerned that we understood about the dogs' traits and needs. We have a gorgeous whippet cross from them, and a lovely border collie, both of who are absolutely fine with our working hours and who are walked at least twice a day. I think it is a bit sad that some rescue centres will not consider people who work full time, even if they can provide a solution for the dog, as there could be many more rescue dogs in happy loving homes rather than fuelling the puppy industry!

olliegarchy99 · 05/02/2018 07:14

so if the rescue cannot tell if a lurcher will jump anything less than a 6 foot fence - they are assuming they all will and turn me down flat
Sad
my hedge and view Smile
sadly the lurchy dog in the picture was my beloved rescue at about 7 yers who I lost in the summer. He never jumped or even tried to.

Ollie, you have a fabulous view! And a lovely house too! Are you east or west of the Malverns? Am rubbish at being able to tell the different sides even though I can see them from home too.

If you are interested in a new lurcher, then give EGLR a ring as they are very much about each dog and family as they come. A recent young dog has gone to live on a houseboat...

olliegarchy99 · 05/02/2018 07:25

I live on the west side of the Malverns (can see 3 of them including the British Camp and the wyche cutting). It is a lovely spot surrounded entirely by fields which have part-time dairy cattle for about 6 months of the year (only turned out there at night).
CMOT - you are right - I should talk to EGLR and keep my fingers crossed. Thank you.

userxx · 05/02/2018 14:45

olliegarchy99 - what a gorgeous place you live and so perfect for a dog or two. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2018 15:18

RightsaidFrederick - fixing gaps would be fine. No one expects perfection, but no one wants the dog making a bid for freedom either!

Ollie, British Camp is one of my favourite dog dogs in the world - last time we met a lady from Malvern with two salukis and the dogs had a fantastic time running loops down the side, up to the fort, and then along what I always think of as the gallops to the next crest. Hope you have a good chat with Pip soon!
