Dog hates new puppy...

Tips needed please.

Bought puppy home today. DDog is 6. She's generally friendly with other dogs. We introduced them in the garden as we had been advised to and DDog barked crazily, wouldn't go anywhere near the puppy, growling and snarling.

I'm trying to keep them separated, puppy in playpen but DDog is still almost constantly barking.

Luckily the cat seems utterly nonplussed by the new addition.

I wasn't expecting them to be friends right away but I've never seen DDog so, well, ferocious really.

How can I settle them both in?

Ah well first mistake they should have been introduced on neutral ground.

I think I would juts give them time , and keep the puppy safe in I d crate when you're not there. My dog hated second one to start with. They settled down quite quickly though. Don't forget puppies are annoying to older dogs, nipping tails and ears etc.

Not sure where I could take a not fully vaccinated puppy that was neutral ground? Which was why I was advised in the garden rather than the house.

Puppy is in playpen when we aren't with her.

I brought the new puppy straight into the house. I didn't do neutral ground. Dogs all got a sniff and they all lay down. Dogs were very interested in the puppy and after a few hours, they accepted him.

Take them for a walk together.

Someone else's garden? Anyway too late but sure they'll be fine. I don't know anyone where a new puppy hasn't been accepted eventually.

Puppy is too small to even fit in her harness yet so walk not happening at the moment!

Hopefully it will settle down, I have a banging headache from all the barking.

I'm worried DDog will actually hurt her. She's very tiny, only just over a 1kg and DDog is a chunky cocker.

DDog1 wasn't sure about DDog2 for about a week. By 2 weeks they were inseparable - big size difference here - but small DDog2 is definitely the boss now!

How's it going today Op?

Can you chuck a treat at big dog whenever she's near puppy and takes a breath from barking?

Strawberryshortcake40 · 28/01/2018 09:30

I've been doing that.

She's in a foul mood, growling at me whenever I go near her. Really unlike her.

My pup has been here 3 + and half weeks now and dog is definitely getting used to her being around. He was not at all keen on her at first (still not that enamoured) but he does tolerate her. He is a lab and she is a bichon/toypoodle so they are vastly different sizes! She charges around leaping at him and nipping his feet but I am always there and when I feel big dog has realy had his fill I separate them. But I do think they need to learn from each other. Big dog gets on the settee to escape but he actually now does get down and socialise with her occasionally I would not leave them together without me ther...yet. But i'm hoping that will come. Ay the moment i pop her in teh crate if I am going on school run etc.

BiteyShark · 28/01/2018 10:17

This is what worries me about getting a second dog. Whilst in theory I think it would be nice for BiteyDog to have a companion I also worry that he wouldn't actually like one.

Strawberryshortcake40 · 28/01/2018 10:34

It's hard to know with them whether they are happy being an only dog or would like company! Also I think maybe I left it too long? Ddog has been an only for 6 years so maybe she's a bit set in her ways.

My dog is 5 so. It much different to yours but I think it’s an individual thing anyway.
