New pup vaccinations

Dear all

I may just be being daft but I’m confused. We pick up our new pup on the 9th Feb at 9 weeks old. He will have had his 8 week jabs (Novibac) The week before and the breeder has then told us to book in his 10 and 12 week jabs, with the thought that he can go to doggy day care (with all vaccinated dogs) at week 11 + 4 days. I’ve booked him in for his 10 week jabs but our vets; part of a national group, is not using the lepto 4, 12 week jabs due to the side effects being seen by the vets in the group. They don’t judge the risk to be high enough given the side effects.

I’m happy to change vets and find one who will do the 12 week jabs if necessary but I’m then concerned that he couldn’t go out for another 10 days post 12 weeks? I can’t manage this from a work point of view as I’m not willing to leave pupster alone at this age for any length of time, but cannot get leave from work for another 2 weeks.

Please could someone explain?

Not using Lepto 4 is pretty normal - the side effects are really nasty.

It might help to think of them in terms of primary and booster vaccinations, rather than 10 and 12 weeks vacs.

The 8 weeks vacs would have been the primary and your dog would need boosters to make them more effective. If your vet doesn't use the same vaccine - e.g. if your pup got a Lepto 4 primary - then you would need to start the process again with whatever the vet DOES use.

Only your breeder and vet can really explain but is sounds like:

  • your breeder gave a Lepto 4 primary vac
  • your vet doesn't use this strain so you have to have a Lepto 2 primary and then booster 2 weeks later

Your day care won't take him until the booster has had time to work (I guess) so that would mean a vaccine now, one in two weeks and then day care a few days after that.

Ah, that would explain it. Fair enough then and if it’s not unusual to NOT use the lepto 4, that’s fine. Back to plan A!
