How long did it take your pup to 'get' the whole toilet training thing?

I have a 10 week old bichon/toypoodle cross. She's very bright, seems very settled and is a joy to have around. But I am wondering when she will get the whole housetraining thing. I am taking her out for wees and pooos frequently and after eating, drinking, playing etc. as recommended. She is responsive to this and performs most times we are ousidet. However sometimes she does this indoors because I simply cannot watch her every second of every minute. I know it takes time but how long - on average - do you thnk it takes for a pup to totally understand that they have to go outside to do their business? My lab was a dream to teach - he was basically clean indoors after 2 weeks of constant vigilance on my part. I'm not expecting miracles btw, I know every dog is different.

Still waiting for the penny to drop for my mini Dachshund who is 8 months! Can't take my eyes off him as he has no desire whatsoever to toilet outside....

My miniature dachshund is only 13 weeks... weeing is done outside whenever I am on the ball enough to remember to take him out regularly. But with two small kids as well I admit I don't always get it spot on, and then I feel bad I've let him down.
As for poos... well so far he seems to have not a clue they are for doing outside!! The weather in the north isn't helping though, as there's only so long we can both stand out in the hail and sleet waiting for nature to take it's course. I'm figuring if we get weeing sorted in the rain, then the rest will follow eventually. I'm lucky in not having carpets downstairs in any rooms, so combined with his willingness to use the puppy pad in the corner I'm not stressing about it too much... he still seems quite young to me so I'm sure it'll come with practise!

bassAce You definitely ahve the right attitude for toilet training ;) Mine is exactly teh same! She wees reliably outside every tie but has not connected the poo thing quite so well. She has pooed outside several times but thinks nothing of doing it insid either and it is less predictable than a wee which they seem to be albe to do more or less on command! I find this bit the most stressful tbh because I feel like I am constantly on the go taknig her out and watching her as much as I can etc. I am hoping it is not too prolonged!

Mine was about 4 months old when he would reliably tap/scratch the patio door to go out. We got him at 9 weeks and he was in a puppy pen overnight with a pad and only used it once on the first night. I was surprised (and relieved) as all the info I'd found on the breed (pug) suggested they can be really stubborn with toilet training and we got him last February so it was cold and wet outside for most of the time.

So pup seems to have sussed the wee thing but poops anywhere! I was literally glued to her today, playing with her, taking her out frequently as usual did active stuff whilst she slept to maximise my productivity and reduce accident time whilst she was awake. Yet the very second I nipped to the loo for a wee she pooed on the carpet! It is so frustrating when you are trying to be on top of it to this degree. I know it will come in time but will there be a lightbulb moment for her?

Our miniature dachshund finally got the pooing outside thing at about 2 years old Shock he does a poo run so we always put him outside but he just used to get distracted.

At five months she became trusted not to pee in anyone’s house.

BiteyShark · 23/01/2018 05:58

They will get it eventually but in their own time. Yours is still very young and as this thread has shown there is a lot of variation with what age each puppy matures at for toilet training. Frustrating to do in the winter (been there). You may find it's just a gradual decline in the time between accidents as her body matures and she recognises the signs and what to do in time before she really needs to go rather than a 'light bulb moment'.

Eric was pretty easy to house train we got him at 9 weeks and by eleven weeks he was completely clean. We only had two accidents in the first few days in the house and they were when I didn't watch him enough.
What helped was the breeder had already started house training the pups before we got him so had a fenced off small area and would regularly take him out and prompt him before we got him. She advised no puppy pads, and to continue the routine she had already started and it was pretty painless.

Current dog was clean within a couple of weeks. I did all the recommended things. Watching her like a hawk and whisking her outside as soon as she started circling, and I think we had max 5 accidents, mostly because we were too slow. She then cottoned onto the fact that she could get out via the cat flap and that was that. She can barely get her head through now, and knocks it with her paw to alert us!
I'm sure it wasn't as simple with our last dog, but then nothing was easy with him, bloody stubborn terrier.
